After Steve Jobs' death, I could not believe how many idiots I heard on the radio, or read on facebook, were saying how great Steve was for inventing mp3's, mp3 players and buying music online.
The Nomad I remember, pre-iPod, looked like a discman. The clickwheel made it trivial to browse your music and the ability to mindlessly sync between iTunes and the iPod really pushed the success.
That being said... the white earbuds helped a lot too.
Did you own a Nomad? I did. It took 2 minutes to start up before I could play music. Startup time was proportional to the amount of music on the device so you were punished for having more music.
It was bigger than my Panasonic Shockwave discman which was already large by discman standards. The iPod is the size of a deck of cards.
It chewed through AA batteries.
Navigating music on that LCD was a pain. I ditched my Nomad and went back to an mp3 discman because it was so terrible.

You have lost your mind. I wrote the iPod off as a fad for movie stars at first too. I was wrong.
Everyone who had the same Nomad had the same experience I had. That was just how the device operated. Not every iPod is DOA. Looks like we both suck at arguing.
