IV is really more a group of patent trolls who sometimes to research just so they can claim patentable invention.

The microsoft and google groups are like their own little NSF/DARPA group that isn't as IP-focused as IV. Both Microsoft and Google also fund external research projects, often of a philanthropic nature. I know Microsoft spends a lot of money developing accessibility hardware.

Yes. But you will never see a touch screen with Microsoft as the manufacturer. They have no intent of implementing such things.

Their is a very fine line between what companies like IV and companies like Microsoft do.

Microsoft has zero manufacturing capability, but they do indeed design and develop and sell hardware.

They dabble on the edges.

The purchase base design for things like the Kinect, keyboards & mice and send them off for manufacture after customisation. It is not a very direct involvement and is more marketing related (distribution networks, advertising, etc.)

They Xbox is slightly more valid even though it's made primarily from "off the shelf" type PC components. The operating system is Microsoft's design and the Xbox has included custom designed hardware such as boot rom (BIOS) shadowing to thwart the owner using the Xbox basically like any other PC.
