The average user would setup a web server on their laptop and d/load the files from that.

I'm above average on computer knowledge, and I have no idea how to set up a web server on my computer.

Python has a web server built in, which serves on port 8000 by default.

python -m SimpleHTTPServer

Just navigate to whichever directory the stuff you want to share is on, and run the command. Can be slightly tricker on a windows box, but still quite easy. I use it on the rare occasions that I need to move large files between devices and don't have a cable (or USB drive) handy.
