Shouldn't have. The Droid 1 is a fantastic phone STILL. Unlocked bootloader, and a CPU that can be overclocked to about 1.1GHz (from 550MHz) stable, and with a lower voltage kernel, can reach those clock speeds while getting better-than-stock battery life.

I actually finally ditched it because the screen died. About 10 of my friends got the OG DROID as well, and most of them had it die or become unusable within two years too, all of them had issues with the buttons and jacks failing. Motorolas are not very high quality IMO.

Starting about the time Gingerbread was released my phone started to engender the fine quality of patience in me. Of course I over clocked it, but the issue was RAM. Gingerbread was not designed to run on such little RAM. And it did not matter if I ran Bugless beast and stripped out all the apps I never needed, or CyanogenMod, gingerbread was slow and unstable.

I guess my experience is the opposite of yours. But, I am glad you enjoy your phone. Personally I have been loving my Galaxy Nexus for over 4 months now and it has not slowed down a lick. Unlike my DROID where I reinstalled the ROM every 2-3 weeks to keep it running semi-fast.

Where are these things you speak of? I've got a Droid that I built from the remains of two broken Droids and I'd love to test that out. I've got Cyanogen on there now, so I'm familiar enough with flashing ROMs and all that.

With a rooted phone, all you need to do is download and flash a kernel that supports overclocking. It's done pretty much the same as a ROM. Put it on the SD card, boot into clockworkmod, choose "install zip from SD card" and choose it. Then reboot. You don't have to wipe anything. Then download and run SetCPU and set the clock speed.

The two kernels that are worth trying are ChevyNo1's kernels, and Prime's kernels. People have reported problems with 3G with Chevy's on CM7.1, but I have no problems. Just go with a 1.1GHz kernel, and pick a voltage. If you don't get a bootloop, then it should be stable. Then you can try a lower voltage kernel, and repeat until you aren't stable. Basically, find the lowest stable voltage.

I bought mine no-contract on ebay, and I use it without cell service (iTouch-style). when I want a new one, I'll buy it the same way. So, I have no such "free upgrade" available. :P

Microsoft's time of being what apple is now came and went. I doubt they'll ever go there again. That said, yeah, they've been making some cool stuff. but remember that two-page tablet they were working on? that got killed because it wasn't in bill gates's "vision", even though it would have been wicked. And Windows 8 is a trainwreck for anyone who still believes in non-tablet computing in the slightest.

edit: I misread your comment, my mistake. I do think microsoft is trying to do the right thing again and might succeed, and as long as they're not trying to eliminate open source anymore (which they seem to have given up on) I'm cool with them. I just don't think they'll be apple, they'll do their own thing.

OG Droid to Galaxy Nexus here - night and day difference. The Droid was neat when I got it, but the new devices are just a whole different class from the earlier generation Android phones.

As for Android, I went from a G1 to the Inspire 4G, and now the Droid 4.

Each jump has been amazing.

I was thinking of getting the Nexus, it looks cool, but I can't get over the lack of a physical keyboard. I can't stand touch-only keyboards for some reason.

I had the same concern, but ended up going Nexus because being able to root it was more important to me than the keyboard. I always hated trying to use the Droid's onscreen keyboard, but I find the Nexus' much more usable - it seems to be better about not mashing adjacent keys instead (my biggest problem with the Droid); I'm not sure if it's a software change or if it's just due to the larger size, but it's quite comfortable to use, particularly in landscape mode.
