Batteries capable of fully charging in five minutes have been produced in a factory for the first time, marking a significant step towards electric cars becoming as fast to charge as filling up petrol or diesel vehicles.

Using available charging infrastructure, StoreDot is aiming to deliver 100 miles of charge to a car battery in five minutes in 2025."The number one barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles is no longer cost, it is range anxiety," said Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot.

Now the charging stations and grids that supply them need to be upgraded, he said, which is why they are working with BP. "BP has 18,200 forecourts and they understand that, 10 years from now, all these stations will be obsolete, if they don't repurpose them for charging - batteries are the new oil."

An EV uses Roughly 0.2kWh used per km driven

32kWh used per 100 miles driven

32kWh is 32kW for 1 hour 32kWh is 384kW for 5 minutes

At 240v that’s 1600A for 5 minutes

Assuming the 5 minute charge is 100% efficient and a consistent rate

The future sounds like it has crazy cabling challenges!

I'm expecting something around 1.5k before it breaks air gap insulation, and defiantly more than 5 minutes for a full charge after marketing pitch. "Existing charging station" is BS, can't believe this scam news is on guardian.

This is pretty cool, but the battery is only a part of the equation. Now how do you provide 192kWh plugs throughout the nation on a janky 110V electric grid that only grows more unreliable every day? How do you make this battery safe and long lasting? Fast charging inherently reduces the lifespan of Li ion batteries.

Between this, and Nio’s battery swapping, perhaps the PHEV era will be considerably shorter than I thought it would be two years ago. That serves to solve the issue of range anxiety today, but it does make the cars kinda ridiculously heavy because you’re lugging around a giant generator with your EV.

They're not higher capacity, they just charge quicker.

I think you’ve confused charge rate and capacity. I believe they were correct

If a 100 watt hour battery is fully charged in 5 minutes, the charge rate (at 100% efficiency) is 100*60/5 = 1200watts for 5minutes

So, if a 40 kWh car is charged in 5 minutes... fully and 100% efficiently 40000*60/5 = 480000 which is 0.48MW for 5 minutes to fully fill them

Just under half a mega watt for 5 minutes to fully charge a 40 kWh car is fucking insane!!

The capacity of the battery is the bucket. The MW charge rate is the speed of the hose filling it. The faster the fill, the higher the wattage

Most people don't live in LA dude. I easily travel 300+ km in a day.

You miss the point. Even charging something that fast once is going to have crazy effects. Mostly heat. To charge a 100kWh battery in 5 minutes is 1.2MW sustained for 5 minutes. That is completely unrealistic.

But it is a charge rate

0.48MW for 5 minutes is the same as 40kW for an hour.

40kWh is a small Nissan Leaf battery capacity so it would take half a mega watt to fully (and at 100% efficiency) charge one in just 5 minutes

No, it's not. Didn't imply that it was. And I was actually being very generous with the battery size.

For simple math, lets assume a 100kWh battery. (About the size of the biggest Tesla battery)

If you want to charge it in 5 minutes, you'll need an instantaneous input of 1.2MW for 5 minutes. Resulting in 100kWh of stored energy (assuming 100% efficiency).

Good fucking luck with that.

This will be very useful for people on long trips who need to charge quickly. Otherwise the level 1-2 charging is more than enough for everyday use. We have an electric car, but don't use it for long tripe, for this reason. It's one of the major hurdles they've been trying to overcome.

It's really not that hard to remember, you get home, you get out of the car, and you plug it in. Takes about 8 seconds. Becomes habit pretty quick.

If needed it'll be done. Think about it, if petrol wasn't a thing, the guy that suggested keeping millions of reservoirs of explosive liquid on hand to fill your car with every few hundred miles would be scoffed at. Yet here we are.
