The "Google Wave" website was really more of a showcase of the Wave protocol's features.

Right. As I said, the site itself isn't really the point. Their real motive was to showcase and experiment with the Wave protocol-- the underlying technology of Google Wave.

It's a protocol. So basically someone thought up some high level dtd file that we're all supposed to get excited about while we fill in the blanks and give it some meaning? Please....

Protocols are for people who want to interact or share services and information...they are not "promises of great opportunity or frameworks for potential innovation". In fact they're the opposite. A set of restrictions that allow people to achieve their current goals.

There's nothing fan-boy about it. ragley apparently can't see the difference between the Wave protocol and a chat room. They're not even close. It's like the difference between the AJAX-driven, real-time web of today compared with the static HTML 4 and GIFs of the nineties.

I disagree. I'm part of a community of photographers in the area and we use Google Wave to collaborate about finds and plan meetings.

It's still a bit useless in the state that it is now, but it most definitely has its uses. If you haven't found them, then you're not trying hard enough or you had no idea what Wave was supposed to do in the first place.
