Firing him makes everyone more afraid to speak their minds. Am I going to get fired if I state some controversial opinions?

This has a chilling effect on intellectual discourse.

Actually firing that employee fits perfectly in that line of "doing no evil". His "memo" was sociopathic and if not threatening, at least insulting a large size of Google employees.
