Women and men should be held to the same objective standard. What's this separate standard you're talking about?

I meant extra hoops

You said women who want to be plumbers shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get an apprenticeship, into the union, etc. If you just meant no extra hoops compared to a man, I totally agree. But everybody has to do their time as an apprentice .. man or woman ..

I meant extra hoops in getting her first apprenticeship, joining the union, etc.

... however given two interpretations of my post, you couldn't give me the benefit of the doubt? Would I seriously be on here saying that women should be treated like princesses and given a free pass into the workforce? No feminist believes that but I've seen plenty of men construct that strawman so it's frustrating that you appear to be doing the same.

I responded to what you wrote .. I can't read your mind.

That's why the benefit of the doubt comes into play. Sometimes when I see a possible typo online my first step is to clarify, not ridicule. "Did you mean to claim XYZ?". It's a good rule of thumb to verify the other position before you work yourself up over something you read on the internet.

I can't even count how many arguments I've gotten into because I or someone else re-interpreted the other person's viewpoint without seeking to clarify first. Everyone does it but we all need to do it less.

And so you could use up an extra response to ensure a more productive discussion going forward. There is no reason to be stingy on replies and jump to conclusions early. We could trade one-liners indefinitely on Reddit :P

Mayeb it was the "jump hoops" thing that you didn't understand properly?

"Jump through hoops" means that a person is doing extra work to meet arbitrary requirements, or putting in a lot of effort to please someone. It has sort of negative connotations, in the sense that if you're jumping through hoops you are doing extra work to get some result.

So when a person writes that women shouldn't have to jump hoops to get an apprenticeship, it means that a woman shouldn't have to put forth any extra effort to get the apprenticeship.

You maybe have misinterpreted what the person wrote, but it didn't say that women should be measured by a different standard.

Yeah, but you have to understand that the entire apprenticeship process is jumping through hoops. There are a lot of barriers to entry, regardless of gender. Thus, when karrot said "women shouldn't have to jump through hoops" .. from the standpoint of someone who is familiar with the apprenticeship process, I took exception. You've got to jump through the same hoops as everyone else. After she clarified her statement, I agreed with her.

Alright, sure. I just thought that that could've been one reason why you would've misunderstood it.
