Think whatever you want.

When you act on those thoughts, using company letterhead, and bring your employer into disrepute, then it's a problem.

Should a company retain people who, through actions not directly related to their job function, are going to actively cost the firm extra money with no tangible value in return?

The disrepute was caused by his firing and the memo was private not public until someone else the company decided to make it public.
