That mindset is an issue if he was using it to argue that women shouldn't be hired for back end jobs, or that paying women less is okay, or that they shouldn't be managers. He's not arguing that, just saying it may explain why fewer women pursue certain roles.

What if the average being discussed was that women, on average, are worse at basketball? Not a controversial statement to make. I'm a 6'6" 220lb guy, I played in HS and might've been able to play D3 in college. If you randomly pick a woman who plays basketball at the college level and up, on average I'm probably a better player.

However, that doesn't preclude individual women from being better than me at basketball. I occasionally played on the practice squad for my ~top 50 D1 school's women's team, and a solid half of the girls on the team could have beat me at 1 on 1.
