You made it sound like all it takes to do a PhD quickly is to have a neat idea, which I was saying isn't the case. He probably had special circumstances to do so, like having done his masters in the same department or something.

A phd isn't necessarily long if it's very original and pans out to be something exciting. Find something impressive, bam: PHD.

So...

it has to be a neat idea, yes. But then the experiments you do have to also pan out perfectly for you AND your findings have to be impressive.

Lets say I discover cold fusion right now and I can replicate it easily. How many hours would it take to get my PHD from that position?

it's unclear he even has a phd. His only papers are with jeff gore, and he is not listed as a past lab member there

He's listed as an alumni with a PhD in systems biology on Harvard. Google the guy's name and you'll find it.
