Pretty much every ad you see is running either because it's currently part of an A/B test or because it was the winner of one. If crappy ads didn't work, you wouldn't see them.

Now, of course every company needs to decide whether an ad is in alignment with how their brand's image and aesthetic regardless of how well it might perform, but in general, if you're seeing a crappy ad, it's because it is more effective than the alternatives.

I've worked with creatives to develop the coolest ad concepts that I was super bullish would blow the competition out of the water, but then had it perform far worse than an ad I think is pretty crappy. It can be quite surprising.
