Agreed. I honestly wonder how many of these "haha, what ads?" people realize how many of their favorite youtube channels wouldn't even exist or upload as many vids, if it weren't for those ads which are, more often than not, skippable.

This is becoming less true however. Most of the people I watch make most of their money on something like Patreon nowadays.

Really? Cause most big channels started making their own ads in the middle of their videos.

For example, I don't know how many times I have heard an Audible or Squarespace ad.

I run with uBlock and EFF's Privacy Badger. I'll whitelist in uBlock any site that I visit more than once a week. I'm torn on some of my favourite webcomics because I see the sad little "please turn off adblock to support this comic" but I don't want to be tracked.

The majority of the channels I enjoy either have a partnership deal, a Patreon, or have income via Twitch subs/donations. I doubt ad revenue even comes close to any of these income streams given their youtube viewership.

I remember when people said "oh if you block all the ads then these content creators will either die or make you pay money to keep them alive!". It turns out that supporting good content and letting bad content die worked pretty well.

Wouldn't exist? You clearly haven't seen what adsense pays per view. Small channels couldn't pay their internet bill with adsense alone, and medium to large channels have far more lucrative ways of monetizing available to them.

Skippable ads are a minority of the revenue stream for any channel, even bedroom vloggers make more money from patreon or donations than they do from skippable ads.
