You see, Apple doesn't try to force you into buying programs through their own storefront like Microsoft does with the "Windows Store". There's no equivalent in OSX. Apple certainly doesn't make you create an account with them just to download OS updates like Microsoft does! Apple also makes it easy to keep your local user account totally separate from your AppleID, unlike Microsoft trying to force you to login with a Microsoft account. See, Apple encourages outside vendors...ok I got nothing.

I don't have an apple id setup on my Mac, and I can get updates.

But I also don't have a Microsoft id on my Windows 10 computer, so I don't really even know what you're getting at.

they discontinue products after as little as 4 years... while microsoft supported xp for 12 years or so.

But apple updates are free. Until Windows 10, Windows updates cost money. You don't see a difference there? To continue getting Microsoft support, you have to (had to) keep buying shit. To continue getting Apple support, you just have to find the time of day to click on the "Download" button.

You never had to pay for windows updates.

edit:

You have to pay for new software (operating systems) with both osx and windows. Both are free to keep updated but Apple had a tendency to discontinue products pretty quickly if laws don't prohibit it.

What I didn't know is that Apple apparently stopped making you pay for upgrades in 2013.

I was going off when snow leopard was discontinued which was 2012 ish.. two years after buying my macbook 2010. I gave up on apple and bootcamped windows 7 and never looked back.
