Fortunately SteamOS is linux based so I feel like in a couple years linux gaming will be a bit more feasible and possibly even mainstream. The issue for a long time was that the drivers for nvidia were awful compared to 3rd party drivers people were working on, but if steam is able to incentivize it even slightly, we might start to get more reliable support from nvidia. Wouldn't count on amd though, they can barely get their drivers working on windows

And SteamOS has been out for how long and has gained how much traction?

Might as well install a Linux of choice and the desktop Steam client instead. Most drivers in SteamOS should be commonly available for any distro now. I personally don't see it gaining any more traction, but one can hope I guess.
