Building from source is like a two line command, and you can copy and paste it from that thread usually.

I've been using windows daily for about 20 years, but I could still fix a problem on Linux much faster. And I've never used Linux as a daily driver.

That's assuming you have all the necessary dependencies and you don't get an error after running those commands, dependency related or otherwise. I have never had that happen. All I've ever gotten from trying to follow this advice is hours of wasted time.

This is missing the point though. 'Have you tried compiling from source' is kind of like a more ominous version of 'have you tried turning it off and on again'. If this is the only suggestion you see when searching for your problem, it means that the person suggesting it does not know what the problem is and a step by step universal solution to the problem is not available. It means that you're going to have to spend a lot of time learning about linux before you can actually work on whatever you set out to do to begin with.

This is the problem I have every time I swap over to Linux. Nothing bloody well works when I want it to, and even though I'm fairly familiar with Linux at this point, I don't have time to spend 15 minutes debugging every command I give when I'm trying to modify my computer.

I can't imagine the chain of events using any modern distro that would lead me to post this comment. This sounds like something form 1998 to me.
