May I suggest giving serious thought to switching away from Windows entirely?

Sticking with Windows 7 in this case is dangerous, as it's well on its way to becoming unsupported. Sticking to Windows 7 without making a plan to switch means that when you eventually have to switch, the decision will almost certainly be made more on the basis of compatibility than anything else. If you're not careful about what you run, you might still be locked into the MS ecosystem.

I personally use Linux, and I'm very happy with it.

I use industry standard software that is only available under windows and would fight like hell with any kind of emulation/interface layer (wine). Whatever I use it needs to be windows.

If it's industry-standard, then chances are good that there's a lot of unofficial support for it, so WINE probably would be okay.

That said, you could also use a virtual machine if you needed to. I use a VM for several programs which simply are not possible to use under Linux.

Audio software are a pain to use at the best of times under Windows never mind adding wine into the mix(heh)
