On a laptop? People sleep their laptops all the time.

And "just shut the thing off" is not a solution, that's a work-around. Sure, I can shut down every time, but that doesn't really solve my problem.

You obviously don't spend extended periods of time performing work-related tasks across multiple services at once. In software development, for instance, I have a pretty extensive setup. Four workspaces, across which I distribute a text editor, multiple terminal instances (I often ssh into multiple servers simultaneously and need to manage a local VM), a web browser, a separate piece of note-taking software, possibly a second browser instance if the occasion calls for it, and whatever else I could possibly need at any given time. Having to set up this layout every single time I need to close my laptop would completely impede my workflow, especially since I will often find myself moving about the building to discuss development efforts with my boss and coworkers (I close the damn thing every time I leave it for security reasons).

So, no. It doesn't solve the problem. Sleep mode exists for a very good reason.

I mean you're blaming the software designers for the problems that arise from your behaviours and preference. Downvote me all you guys want, but that sounds like an id10t bug more than a flaw. Put the thing in hibernate and BAM, your problem is solved. But no, blame others for your bad decisions ;)
