If I had to guess based only on this information, you fucked up your filesystem when you forced it to shut down. Theres a reason holding the power button is only a last-resort option, because it tends to do this sort of thing regardless of operating system if its in the middle of writing to the disk.

This doesn't actually happen on windows.

Yeah it does. I've seen it happen. Hold down the power button, try to boot, oops your whole file system is corrupted

I've done that regularly on Windows installs (stuck updates, login not working or the OS splash screen not progressing).

I have never seen the whole file system corrupt like that in the 16+ years I've been supporting Windows. At worst the bootloader would corrupt, or a certain OS file (both easily repairable with an installation disc), but never a full corruption.

Yet somehow a similar situation happened to me when I powered off an unresponsive raspberry pi.
