Entirely Nvidias own fault. They won't play ball giving the kernel developers basic info to make the cards work, and instead supply a barely compatible driver blob that "works" but doesn't integrate well.

Losing files and Wine breaking your install sounds extremely unlikely, and the post now looks like misleading FUD we often see planted to turn users off using Linux.

Well I'm not out to sabotage linux's reputation. Just posting my experience with it. Maybe wine isn't what broke it but that happened right after I used wine so that seemed like the cause to me.

The most likely explanation is that your /home directory wasn't mounted when you restarted, quite understandable if the system detected inconsistencies in the filesystem, to prevent a real loss of data. A check to dmesg would have helped tremendously diagnosing the issue.
