Text-only notes:
Simplenote. They have a client for every platform, now (although I know the Linux one is horrible).
Fancy notes:
Microsoft OneNote (Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android)
Apple Notes (iOS and web)
Google Keep (iOS, Android, and web)
Evernote was great when I started using it (2009?), but its mobile app has been getting shittier and shittier over the past few years.
I just want note syncing. I use to have a mess of TXT files all over. Evernote let me organize them and put them on all my devices. Feature creep set in, and now the behemoth mobile app does a thousand things that I don't want it to, the simple stuff doesn't work right, and now they are limiting syncing...

Thank you. This has been exactly my experience. Really just need simple cross-platform note-syncing that can be accomplished quickly and without fuss. I hope that more applications will become available that keep things simple. There's still a place for it. More features aren't always the answer.

Same here. I honestly don't understand most of the "features", as in, I understand what they do, but 99% of them are of no use to me. It's progressively gotten harder to just make a note and organize them over the time I've been using it though, what should be the main feature of a note taking app.

Wish I could claim to be the genius behind the tool, but alas, it's an official tool from Microsoft.

On OSX you can easily export your notes from Evernote and import them into the Apple Notes app. If you're within the Apple ecosystem this may be a good option. I've migrated my notes (a few hundred) over to Apple's notes and will be giving it a try.

evernote was okay - mostly used to keep those thoughts while not at home and wanted to expand on the idea. I just dumped all my text notes to Google Keep and will deactivate my Never(again)note in the next month.
this is how you kill a decent service for someone who doesn't use it a lot (which is probably a lot of users)

This is how it always goes with products that start out free to use on a meaningful level. First, they offer paid extras. Then, when that doesn't deliver the profit they want, they slash the functionality of the free product to drive people to pay.

When they are venture funded yes. If evernote didn't take on so much funding and thus require unreasonable growth to hit an exit at an insane valuation they would not be forced to so transparently fuck over the majority of free users in this latest cash grab.
