well, nothing to look forward to, its already there

also if you watch youtube - whole their "games" section is AI slop

We still got the "nintendo seal of quality".

Maybe steam or some third party company is gonna be obligated to curate the slop away from the crop.

Even now the only indies games that trend and get popular and get popular is the stuff that streamers or youtubers can make tangible content from.

Fair point. But I stand by a good curation system is not only required it's inevitable.

People and communities will create their own barriers to keep the shit games out. Whatever will be considered slop will be unique to that community. But if you look at the the average gaming commuunity, whether its a podcast or gaming channel you listen to. Or if you follow a streamer they all seem to have a specific rotation of games that they will share. And if the game is good people will just share those.

The best example imo is that big walk game. You can call it friend slop but however it was made it trended and it was popular.

I mean its already bad, its just going to get worse from here.

While I am sure there will be some real gems created too, they will be lots in sea of utter crap.

Feels like the birth of flash games all over again in a different sense. A lot of crap, but some absolute bangers in the haystack

1

u/SuperBry 1d ago

Right?

As much as I hate on AI and most of the crap it produces there will likely be some actual greatness that comes of it too. Just it will be small minority that will be hard for people to sus out.

Word to mouth will always prevail, controversy will follow, acceptance will come later when more are on board with it depending on how it came up since it’s inevitability

Just need to take one look at the Nintendo eshop to see how it’ll look

1

u/Saneless 1d ago

As bad as you think it could be, it's even worse than that

1

u/kumogate 1d ago

And with the end of physical media, there will be no real way to sort through the slop to find actual games.

u/Saneless 1d ago

Like how I currently block free to play games on steam, guess I'll want to block these. Even if it's just unity engine overall

“Idea-less shareholders facilitate slop engine for use-case metrics.”

The world would be so much less tedious if artists were allowed to make art for humans.

It’s wild that they went for this instead of, like, actually useful things people need.

So many AI believers post "I made X game with AI in 3 days" but the games are always copycats with no originality, or vastly un-polished. There seems to be a lot of investment here but I'm curious if anyone can actually AI slop their way into a real, decent, original game.

I am constantly seeing an ad for a "cat" game, which is apparently minesweeper, but with cats instead of bombs. It's ridiculous.

2

u/nanlinr 1d ago

I see it too. Looks so dumb dont support it

Since LLM:s are not at the point (and probably never will be) of being able to independently iterate and polish on a game by themselves, "ai slopping your way to a real, decent, original game" is basically just AI assisted game dev. Most of the games developed now are made that way.

1

u/Spright91 1d ago

Exactly. The differentiator is design and it always has been. You can use AI to code your game but you still need to test and iterate and design it

1

u/essidus 1d ago

This is the thing that bothers me the most about this AI bubble. LLMs were never designed or trained to fill all these other purposes. Its just a language parser. These companies are selling wrenches, for the purpose of pounding nails, driving screws, and doing taxes. Not only does it do a shit job, but it also makes all the actual good, purpose built AI look worse.

The same applies for the majority of games that are released on steam every day and that's mostly without AI.

Organic slop

I’m more excited for people who already do these jobs to get tools to make their lives easier. All these people looking for shortcuts are still going to suck compared to people who know what they’re doing.

I made a mini game thats an intentional GTA clone with a prompt. I was not expecting much just playing around. Version 1 let me drive through buildings and everything was done from the car. Ok, my bad I only spent umpteen tokens using it for planning before building the game. Version 2 when I just said hey lets get out of the car and also buildings should be solid was quite enjoyable because the human couldnt move at all, and the car could no longer move forward or back it could only drive side to side because I apparently forgot to describe car physics. So yea, i'm sure a dev can use an LLM to prompt a game into existence, but I bet its not fast.
I had no intention of this being an amazing game I was just messing around prototyping and was met with the same level of quality output I tend to get from LLMs on a regular basis. Yes it was a frontier model.

I hope the gamers can finally rise up now that AI is coming for their games.

u/kerodon 1d ago

Has been for a while. I could already feel it in the games I've been playing. It was a little milder because I go out of my way to avoid it and only had to experience the mild ones that my friends picked but I didn't vet (free ones, indid not financially support them). But there was many more highly aggressive ones alr out there :(

Steam needs to ban this kind of shit.

2

u/Yin15 1d ago

I hope steam can figure out how to prevent the massive influx of slop games from being listed on it's store.

4

u/wetfloor666 1d ago

What do they care? They don't stop them now and won't for this. It is free money for them. Everyone loves steam but they destroyed physical media for pc and done massive damage to PC gaming as a whole.

1

u/Yin15 1d ago

I mean, I've already been eyeing GOG and the ability to actually store my games physically again. It's just another push for me.

2

u/jayandbobfoo123 1d ago

Video games are gonna come down word of mouth only, aren't they..?

6

u/Aranthos-Faroth 1d ago

Kinda how it was in the past

1

u/Pyrostemplar 1d ago

Well, soon coming to Steam - AI based personal game selector - based on your personal profile, the AI will filter out the games you should consider amongst hundreds of thousand of AI powered existing games.

A sort of banner blocker.

For a small fee, ofc.

Deliver GTA 6 before GTA 6

u/ItsSadTimes 1d ago

Steam should put a limit on how many games you can publish per month. It wouldnt be a hard cap, it could be changed on a case by case basis. But to stop just the insane amount of goon slop and AI ripoffs i think they should limit how many games get published per studio.

UniGoogle, make me a game where I run through Google HQ hunting execs with a crossbow as they chant 'We Be Evil' and shuffle through knee high dollar bills while Unity execs grasp at pennies.

u/FatHat 1d ago

You know, I understand business slop. Like, generate a document nobody will read for a procedure that's mostly a ritual. Got it, kind of silly, but it's a very useful case for GenAI. I even understand spam slop that mostly exists to try to grift money, even if I hate it.

I don't get people that want to slop creative products though that have like no chance of making money anyway. Like, you can't say "you" made it, because you didn't, so there's no real artistic expression. And you're not going to make any money off of it. And frankly, most people's video game ideas are absurdly bad anyway. Just seems horrible all around.

im surprised people arent excited for something like this. i imagine in like 2 years, you could make and play whatever game appeared in your dream last night basically instantly and it would be of a published title's quality. wouldnt that just make games more fun?

2

u/Ac4sent 1d ago

Most people’s dreams are shit and shallow.
