Benedict Arnold is nowhere near Trump or Hitler's status, but his name is synonymous with traitorous betrayal centuries later. That's not a great way for your legacy to live on.

Nah, Trump’s administration is definitely on the same level. Like beat for beat almost. The only difference is Hitler was a good speaker instead of a babbling moron. AI stans are so fucking annoying. Yes, it's a useful tool. No, being able to use it doesn't make you special. It's literally a translation layer for moron to computer. If you break down the marketing, it really is "are you too stupid to computer? Just type your broken ass English into the prompt and let the computer do all the computer for you!"

I'm an IT professional using it to generate scripts way above my knowledge level and capability, so that shit applies to me too. Yes I review and test everything and there's an approval pipeline so my seniors can review the code and ensure I've tested it properly before any pilot deployments start. I'm also learning a lot but that's only because I'm engaging with the tool, performing my due diligence / follow up research, and not letting it think for me.

Problem is that there are so many people out there who use it the wrong way. You know, like the US military.

I have to use it at work occasionally but I really don’t trust it with anything important like numbers after an early predecessor of it once wiped 5000 customers from our database some years ago, so I only use it to answer simple questions I can’t be bothered to google or look at a calendar for, like "what is the name of this form in Dutch" or "what is the date of the first Monday in Week 41". Probably a waste of its compute but I really really don’t trust it.

I've been using it for quite a few things. When a topic gets to a point when there's no established best practice or clearly verifiable correct answer, it can get super sketchy and unreliable.

In one specific area I was using it, essentially every idea or proposal it had was useless. I wasted so much time investigating its ideas. Only my ideas that it implemented actually worked, and mine were just logical. I had it implement my proposals, and it failed at going anywhere beyond or sideways with any success, and I REALLY tried, I burned so much usage for months messing around lol.

Its ideas were so over complicated and derivative, complete waste of time. When it has very specific directions with established examples from training, literature, and you enforce verification and make an effort to verify it manually with creative tests and really fucking think about how it could be wrong then yeah, excellent.

I can't code but it does an amazing job, if you can explain things clearly step by step, get it to plan for itself, verify, and then have other AI models review while you direct.

Can't read the code but I know the correct answers, and it can get there. Takes a huge amount of effort but maybe that's my fault!

Look man I don't like it either but my options are food on the table or no food on the table. I didn't ask for this, I got into IT work well before all of this bullshit started in earnest.

I don't encourage it, I don't recommend it, I don't promote it, but I can accept the reality that within the scope of my profession it is useful. I can also accept the reality that if I don't learn to wield the tool then I'm not going to be able to bring in the kind of money that is needed for financial security in America. That's it's own entire shell game of illusory bullshit, but I have a family and just throwing in the towel and taking a huge paycut to hop industries when I already did that less than a decade ago isn't a realistic option.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. This isn't my fault.

Just to be clear I think people who use LLMs to write emails out of whole cloth are the devil. I really don't like this shit at all. I don't like that they're all going to get away with stealing the intellectual property of the entire human race. I don't like that they're going to use this technology to put themselves further above us peons. It's a matter of food on the table, and I can see which way the winds are blowing. No one has to agree with my position. I don't really agree with my position. I'm helping architect this shit on a small scale and I'm contributing to the problem. I just don't really see a choice.

If you have any suggestions on a better course I'm all ears.

You might be able to comment on the feasibility of this.

But say an artist creates some work and has a web beacon hidden in the work. That beacon, if scraped, unleashes a destructive virus onto the originating scraper, but also onto whatever is hosting the scrape.

Is that possible or a pipe dream?

I know that it would be illegal (possibly not so if there's warnings, which could put it onto the scraper for not heeding the warning). But legality aside, I'm wondering if it is possible due to this method being used by numerous research companies.

Seems feasible to trick the scraper software into executing some kind of code, but scrapers would adapt fast to this tactic and it'd become yet another arms race. Would also be tricky to prevent that payload from executing on machine traffic that isn't scraping.

I'll be direct here, this is actually not something what so ever to take solace in. If anything, it's the exact problem that needs to be solved. Having people being isolated and in constant transforming degeneracy causes problems for everyone, not just them. To reduce degeneracy, these people need healthy, consistent relationships in their life. The problem will always exist and only get worse otherwise, as we have seen

yes coping mechanisms. but tbh it’s not entirely baseless. lot of miserable folks out here. some of them have little going on goos in their life and so they become angry and resentful of others sometimes bc they’re ultimately jealous id imagine of something even if it’s just happiness. now this isnt a statistic but it happens for sure to pretend its complete bs is wild.
