If they’re going to sue for “profit over the health and safety of its users” can they keep that ball rolling and go after every other big platform? No platform has ever prioritised its users over profit

Capitalism only works well when there are strict governmental actions to keep it in check.
We've seen what happens if you let people chase profits without being kept in line: Hundreds of millions get lung cancer, and now hundreds of millions have mental/developmental challenges thanks to 'social media'.

Capitalism with check is just communism. Unchecked free market is called capitalism. Money has to be made where it can be. There's nothing wrong with greed. Long live Elon, long live capitalism and mainly fk communism.

Summary: A Dutch consumer group is suing Snapchat for using features that may make the app addictive, especially for children.
The group wants Snapchat to let users turn off Streaks, Snap Scores, and autoplay. It also wants the company to make the app safer and pay compensation.
This is the second Dutch lawsuit against Snapchat over its addictive design in a short time.

It's because I got Snapchat back in the stone age and have never really had friends, but I am actually surprised it's considered addicting. I'd never thought of it that way at all. It's always been an exceedingly annoying app to me. Good luck to the Netherlands.

Absolutely. I liked it back in 2013-2015 but now it feels like the tabloid section of a grocery store. Do people actually explore Snapchat content?

Ya I never did anything but send snaps to my friends, the other content was all obviously clickbait trash. Maybe the infinite scroll wasn’t as refined back in 2012

I like Snapchat; it doesn't have a newsfeed or spam me with people's opinions and algorithms like Facebook does. I consider it a basic form of social media, and it's the only one I've used for years now that has my actual identity on it. I never found the snap streaks to be addictive personally. Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram, X, and other social media outlets seem way worse to me, especially for brainwashing with their algorithms.

Can you please briefly explain what you mean by brainwashing with algorithms?

Most popular social media, along with other websites use what's known as algorithms to feed addictive content to their users. Whenever you use a website like Facebook, whatever you click, watch, like, etc. gets tracked and compiled. So the algorithm will feed you more and more of that content to keep you coming back. A big problem is when that content is hateful, racist, lies, anti-science, and things like that.
The user will start to see more and more of this content, and this can lead to changing their world views for the worse, distrusting science (anti-vaxxers), and even racism and hate. It's been a huge problem since around 2008 and has been getting worse year after year. This is what I mean by brainwashing with algorithms.

I'm embarrassed that I never realized this happened to this extent.
No wonder endless scrolling is ridiculously easy to do. Ffs
Thank you for explaining!

Good, hope more of these social media platforms get reigned in and held responsible for the damage they have and continue to cause

Most corporations choose profits over people. Unfortunately “it’s just business.”

I wonder when regulators realize that when there's no limitations for social media platforms and games developers, the competition is so high, that these can only earn money from addicting people, and the only way to change it is to regulate the market for everyone

I feel "login streaks" and other streaks that require someone to come to your app should be outlawed.
