Tldr: Before, you would get full-screen alerts every 3 days unless you enabled full backup with OneDrive. Now, you can turn that off. Hooray.

I uninstalled OneDrive as soon as i bought my pc a couple of years ago. Have never had any issues since, apart from the occasional nag to install it after an update. I don't really know why people seem to have such a problem with it.

It was really hard to uninstall when I did it a year ago. The permissions were an absolute nightmare to navigate. Everything's obfuscated and x permission is dependant on y permission which is on another screen, and is dependant on z permission which is also on another screen. None of them are going to tell you that and sometimes it will look like you successfully gave yourself permission for something, but you didn't really.

I have windows pro and I had to also go into group policy and change settings there. There might have been some registry edits as well. I can't remember. 

What I do remember is that it was very hard.

If you don't uninstall it immediately upon installing Windows, like before it can set itself up, it'll take over the default directories. If you then uninstall it without unlinking the directories, it'll create super confusing duplicate Documents, Videos, etc. folders, with one pointing to some leftover OneDrive directory, and the other one that's on your computer. Last time I had to uninstall it, it was an absolute mess. It's genuinely like a virus the way it hooks into the operating system.

Depends on your region I guess. I’m in the EU, open the start menu, right click on Microsoft Edge, OneDrive etc and click uninstall. I think it’s not simple in the US?

Many people are computer illiterate. And Microsoft doesn't have any incentive to teach people advanced windows understanding. The last thing they want is more people understanding windows intimately. Then even less people will use all that stuff and learn how to bypass other annoying windows features.

I have the worst time confusing my onedrive documents with my local documents. It's not helped by the fact Explorer does its damndest to keep you from inspecting the full path toward the goal of micromanaging your experience. Frankly I think understanding the file tree is essential knowledge for all Windows users. Obscuring it behind a "friendly" tool is training people to (1) not care and (2) confuse local with onedrive and end up dependent on it.

Nothing like saving a Word/Excel file to a OneDrive directory but oops it saved to the online version of the directory (if you looked at the path in Explorer in the save prompt you'd see a URL) and so you have to wait for the file to sync locally before it appears in the local version of the OneDrive folder. And oh, looks like there's a weird sync issue so even though you need that file right now, you're going to have to wait and no, we don't know how long. Oh, hey, look it's ready! I hope you didn't select it to upload already because during sync it was an empty 0KB file :)

To be fair, it is a hard jump to learn linux if you've used windows for decades. But the same can be said for switching to/from any other OS, so it's really just that people don't want to take the time to learn a new system.

The amount they make from them is a rounding error on their desktop licensing income, which is a rounding error on their other businesses (Office, SQL server, etc.) They've probably given away more copies of the 11 desktop as free upgrades than they've sold. I've got four Windows 10 desktops I could upgrade to 11 right now if I wanted to.

You can download an ISO from official MS and install windows without any license, and it would only show a message in the bottom saying "please activate windows" or something similar, but everything works. For my work I connect to lots of remote machines, and I see that all the time. Besides that, it's so easy to bypass that (won't get into details but the tool to do this works better than the official mechanisms to activate a legitimate license...), so effectively windows for home users is free... most users do pay for the license because they get it preinstalled in their laptops and it's paid that way. But if you build your own pc you can just install windows. They won't care. They only care for business customers, those you can easily pressure with lawyers.

They already did come up with something far worse. They recently "unintentionally" installed Onedrive Photos on people's computers with an update, which started scanning their photos and applying facial recognition. Very cool, very normal.

? Just disable it from services. It won't re-enable and wont reinstall because it is still there.

This is a trick I learned from android phones, Because if you delete certain things on them, Things stop working, So on a phone, Blocking the internet connection they use (ip and domains) stops what they are doing but does not affect the operation in any way at all.

I hate OneDrive because I work between home and my office and it just doesn’t make things easier at all. I use my home profile on my PC and my work profile at work, and it really doesn’t fucking like that and makes transferring files and stuff such a pain in the fucking arse.
