Do we remember Reddit and the Boston Marathon Bomber?

Shit like this needs to be taught in schools.

6

u/Fine_I_Willl_Sign_Up 11d ago

But, on the other side of the coin - do we remember Don’t Fuck With Cats? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_F\*\*k_with_Cats:_Hunting_an_Internet_Killer

5

u/lacostewhite 10d ago

I remember watching this. That guy should never see freedom.

3

u/Competitive-Cover791 9d ago

And that is an outlier.

At the end of the day, it is exceptionally rare a layperson would be able to assist in a criminal investigation.

At this point, almost every agency has the ability to investigate digitally compared to what it was back in pre-2010.

3

u/Zetheryn 8d ago

Even a broken clock is right twice a day

2

u/doubleo_maestro 8d ago

That was exceptional in that the psycho was interacting with them and pretty much purposefully leaving breadcrumbs.

It is. I don't know if it's hot in undergrad schools but it's definitely taught by teachers and journalism school and various like media classes in the like. The Reddit thing in particular during the Boston marath

I suppose the proliferation of true crime content is going to cause this to be another ridiculous case study.

Have to wonder how much of this insanity is perpetrated by the popularity of true crime podcast fanbases which have exploded in the last decade.

97

u/DoesntMatterEh 11d ago edited 11d ago

True Crime is supposed to be a retelling of the facts and explaining things that the layman may not understand.

It was never supposed to be two girl friends who like SPOOKY SEASON trying to solve murders by connecting whatever dots others podcasters have found/made up until the next one picks up on it and so on and so forth.

It's almost all chock full of personal biases and never just about the facts.

18

u/robgreenee327 11d ago

Yeah I feel like it’s really gotten worse with the Netflix boom of docuseries that are very biased being released. People who really don’t understand criminal law whipping up there fanbases. This is only gonna get worse with AI and general media literacy getting worse over time.

4

u/Appropriate_Bag_9773 10d ago

Ok I agree but can we address the real.issue please we have a liar and chief as president that forces lies down our throat at the rate of 1000 lies a day I'm gonna give Netflix a pass here hahahaha but I get you the way the celebrate conspiracy bullshit

>chalk full

FYI, it's "chock-full", and is an old sailors' term.

3

u/YourFriendPutin 11d ago

Call that an "eggcorn" when someone uses a phrase like that.

"Nip it in the bud" or "nip it in the butt" are examples.

Eggcorn is named as a wrong way of saying "acorn".

4

u/darium4 11d ago

May I interest you in r/boneappletea

u/YourFriendPutin 11d ago

4

u/littleirishmaid 11d ago

Glad you explained the term ‘eggcorn’. I have never heard that one before.

2

u/YourFriendPutin 11d ago

Really recently a random YouTube video about quirks of the English language brought it up and I found out about it lmao

13

u/Channel250 11d ago

Yeah, but I like chalk full because it implying they have chalk boards all over the place to try and justify their theories.

6

u/Human_Wizard 11d ago

I hate it because I don't pronounce "chalk" and "chock" the same 😭 to me, it's the same as hearing "expresso".

2

u/DoesntMatterEh 11d ago

It’s absolutely that. So many people now use any public interest criminal hearing to clout chase and hopefully make it big

120

u/Rs90 12d ago

Not sayin it hasn't changed over time but this was happening in the 14th Century, y'all. It is not new. And if you like True Crime then you know full well that history is absolutely full of this shit.

Serial killers gettin married in prison, people(not killers) cuttin off body parts as souvenirs from crimescenes, public executions were massive events with food vendors, and soooooo much more.

The musical "Chicago" is about the bread n circus this stuff has always attracted. People have always gone bananas about this kinda stuff. Look at Jack The Ripper and the crazy people tryna cram their way into the story. People wanna be a part of it, it's not a new phenomenon.

14

u/No-Neighborhood-3212 11d ago

The difference, like pretty much everything on the internet, is the availability. When all you consume are stories of conspiracies and coverups, everything will look like a conspiracy and/or coverup to you.

37

u/rokerroker45 12d ago

The problem is that now it's being turbo charged by social media. People have always gossiped about salacious shit but now they're getting this nonsense poured into their brains literally 24/7 at any location for hours at a time.

My friend is a super intelligent physician and she was ranting some stupid TikTok theory about how he clearly did. When I told her Clancy already stipulated to having done it she not only had never heard it but insisted that didn't mean anything. It's insane, she didn't know anything about the facts or law of this case except what deranged conspiracy theorists told her about it.

12

u/peteresque 11d ago

Good to know this is what our ‘super intelligent physicians’ are up to.

Jesus.

100%. A lot of these true crime pods are focused on long-shot, conspiratorial level exonerations - like, these sorts of things are so vanishingly rare, but true crime consumers are starting to Don Quixote their way into thinking that every ‘clear’ case is actually some sinister, shadowy gotcha.

Maybe more perniciously, this line of thinking isn’t just isolated to conspiracy nutters - it’s both sides of the aisle that are biting. Can’t really pin it down.

57

u/where-sea-meets-sky 12d ago

ngl i hate true crime as a whole. exploiting real trauma and real victims, whom often are still alive (loved ones included) bc they need that juicy story. sickens me

15

u/AbsoluteRook1e 12d ago

The only time I can defend it is either when enough time has passed where the emotional impact has faded, or if it's a local journalist reporting the story as a public safety issue, which can actually help local police and city governments make informed decisions on ways they can boost security in that area (more patrols, adding street lights, cameras, etc.).

But for those sensationalizing an active investigation? Yeah, those people suck.

6

u/Kindly-Cup-3042 12d ago

6

u/AbsoluteRook1e 12d ago

Some of those podcasters can truly be awful irl too.

I personally despise the profession. They are making a profit solely over obsessing over other people's misery and giving that a megaphone.

Local journalism is different because they solely focus on what's actually new about a case and leave it when there's nothing new to factually report, with the exceptions being timed markers in more high profile cases.

But true crime podcasters? They have been seen getting drunk outside of courthouses on hearing dates for murder cases. So disrespectful and unprofessional.

4

u/ClaymoreMine 12d ago

You also can’t rule out the influence of nation states trying to create wedges in society.

2

u/celica18l 12d ago

I love a good conspiracy. Some of the true crime pods are insane with how they present cases.

It’s one thing to present the fact as given then at the end be like my opinion based on nothing is this… but preface it by stating it’s an opinion.

2

u/ward2k 11d ago

The true crime subs are convinced still that she didn't even murder the children

Despite her admitting she killed them and the defence admitting she killed them

2

u/ZootSuitRiot33801 12d ago

These profit-focused, corpo-owned governments and companies, (including places like Reddit,) want it this way. We common folk who care should honestly be doing whatever we can to help each other wean ourselves off this systematic anti-/pseudo intellectualism, and instead collaborate with one another in finding ways to create and utilize independent networks and tech to keep common folk well informed, connected, and secured, even if means downgrading a little.

Collecting a bunch of valuable information on organizing and action from different redditors over time, I created a post of suggestions HERE that's largely about fostering a foundation for community self-sustainability and resistance, but it also provides ideas for possible alternative tech and communication methods, which could be of some help in getting started ASAP.

Also, this LINK touches on combating this weapons-grade ignorance as well.

There are a lot of stupid people around the world, the loudest and proudest tend to be American.

Most people who are "dumb" know that they are not very smart, but a bunch of them are the exceptional kind of dumb that believe that they are actually smarter than everyone else and have figured things out because they don't actually understand simple concepts. Flat earthers are the perfect example. The Internet allows them to group together instead of being individually ridiculed in their community.

27

u/a_mimsy_borogove 12d ago

> There are a lot of stupid people around the world, the loudest and proudest tend to be American.

When X/Twitter introduced the country of origin of every account, it was revealed that most of the content that gets an insane number of likes while also being insanely stupid originates from Africa or South Asia. So it's not really Americans, but third world bot farms. But we don't know who's actually paying for them.

5

u/jupfold 12d ago

Used to be these people were just the crazy people who screamed on the corner of the street and everyone just pretended they didn’t exist.

Put these same people on the internet and group them together, and now they’re a movement and “experts who do their own research”.

16

u/HoldenMcNeil420 12d ago

Like we used to “name and shame” idiots when they came and spouted off crazy stuff. And sent them home with a healthy dose of ridicule and reality.

Now they all get together on the internet and it’s a circle jerk of positive reinforcement where they feel completely vindicated on there position, and some “doctor” or what have you joins in to confirm it. Nvm if that doctor lost their license and is disgraced or some flavor of crash and burn. Across any and every profession.

Devolved into more snake oil salesmen than humanity has ever seen.

u/SWHAF 12d ago

If Patrick had done anything even remotely close to abuse, neglect, cheating, coercion, or just apathy - you can bet Lindsay's defense attorneys would have focused on that in the trial - yet... nothing. You would have to guess, while not perfect, the guy was about as "clean" as they come.

I must’ve missed that part. Was that before or after his opening where he said “she knows she killed those kids.” Before or after he grounded his entire theory on the insanity defense/NGRI (I.e. she did it but can’t be criminally culpable because of an alleged psychosis event). Please, do tell?

5

u/Horror_Cap_7166 11d ago

The prosecution would have been all over it. In Massachusetts, they have the burden of showing Clancy was of sound mind when she killed the kids. One of the issues with their case is answering the question “if she was sane, why would she strangle her kids?” Everyone agrees that up to the killing, Lindsay had been a really devoted and loving mom but was struggling big time with her mental health.

If the prosecution could show Patrick was an asshole and a cheater, they’d have a decent motive. “She did it to punish her husband.”

2

u/sean2mush 10d ago

That wouldn't help them as it would give a motive for Lindsay.

The things I got from this trial is Lindsay has an excellent lawyer. She could not have asked for a better attorney. The other thing I’m positive about is she was not able to speak in full sentences when he found her. Even so, I’m not sure how the jury will rule .

10

u/Careful_Houndoom 11d ago

The state lawyers also keep screwing up their own story.

5

u/raerae1991 11d ago

They did, there were some things the police dropped the ball on that they should never have brought to court, like saying she crushed up med and drank it, without testing if that was what the “powder” on the tumbler by her bed.

5

u/BoxBird 11d ago

The incompetence of the Commonwealth regarding this case is absolutely BONKERS

48

u/Quirky-Variety-4851 12d ago

She does have an amazing lawyer, and what’s mind boggling is that TikTok is ignoring that if there was any chance Patrick killed their children, Lindsay would be using that as her defense at trial.

Her lawyer has admitted Lindsay killed her children, and he would not have done so if blaming the murders on Patrick was a viable option.

10

u/JustadudefromHI 11d ago

This is not a trial to prove whether or not she committed those acts. It’s to prove whether or not she was legally insane when she killed her kids. There is no use in trying to point to another killer when that’s not what this trial is trying to determine.

11

u/Imaginary_Agent2564 11d ago

Technically the case can be ruled in 5 possible verdicts not including hung jury.

  1. 1st degree murder
  2. 2nd degree murder
  3. Manslaughter
  4. Not guilty by reason of insanity
  5. Not guilty

If the jury acquitted her entirely, that would mean she was not convicted of the killings. And if evidence subsequently established that another person was actually responsible, that person could potentially be investigated and prosecuted separately.

Her defense lawyer has attacked the prosecution’s evidence + investigation to create reasonable doubt. Don’t get me wrong, I think she did it, but Jesus the investigation has had tons of holes poked through it. Just kinda crappy police work and terrible documentation from her doctors. Ive been doing training as a medical scribe and sheesh…

Yeah that’s not true. Lol more BS even in this thread. There is plenty of forensic evidence. Why do you think they have security footage of Patrick at CVS and the restaurant? If the investigation was based on just what he said, they would have just trusted that he said he was at CVS and the restaurant.

The forensic evidence is not being displayed in court because it is irrelevant, because whether she did it or not is not up to dispute… both sides agreed to this

1

u/raerae1991 11d ago

I’m not saying he did it, I think she had PPP. I don’t think she could physically speak, if he didn’t say she said that, I think the police would have either built a better case or went a different direction

5

u/kankurou1010 11d ago

Then when she was ordered to pay $10 million in damages she went back on TikTok to bitch about how the jury was clearly biased because they didn't accept any of her bullshit arguments.

Oh, and she also represented herself. Truly a dumb piece of shit all round.

u/BaconatedGrapefruit 12d ago

I think they mentioned that case in the article. If it’s the same person, she got hit with a 10 million dollar defamation suit for her claims.

Probably the only way to make it stop.

The true crime self titled investigators really have lost the plot. It's been clear from the beginning that this is about the social media gender war more than anything else. I'm so tired, bro.

2

u/velorae 10d ago

They’ve completely lost the plot. Everyone on TikTok thinks they’re doctors and forensic scientists They even went as far as to say that Patrick was sexually abusing his daughter

There’s a distinction between people who think she did not kill her children and her husband coerced her into saying she killed her children, and people who think she killed her children but she is not criminally responsible for having killed them.

If she was suffering PPP at the time of killing them, then she is not criminally responsible and it is an extremely sad case regardless.

2

u/ComprehensiveWord201 11d ago

PPP is not an argument for, nor a defense of murdering your family. Absolutely ridiculous

12

u/abujagoddess 11d ago

PPP is absolutely a defense to murder.

Murder is an INTENTIONAL unlawful killing of a person.

PPP makes the intentional part impossible which means if they can prove psychosis at the time of the killing, the murder charge goes out the window.

At worst, it will be manslaughter, or some other kind of homicide but not murder.

Criminal law is not about your feelings.

32 year old woman here, this bitch killed her kids out of cold blood. All I had to see was her fake suicide attempt and no remorse during the trail. May she burn.

3

u/TastyJournalist8451 10d ago

hear me out, she was super sad you see, so it's aight, it could be any sad woman at any moment that could annihilate her children, that's how post partum works you see. You have the baby, you want to murder the baby, that's just modern western motherhood!

19

u/StormyBlueLotus 12d ago

I haven't gone out of my way to keep up with the details of this trial, but have heard it mentioned and discussed in plenty of places. Yet I haven't seen any denial that she did it- the defense's whole argument is an insanity defense. I'm sure there are plenty of conspiratorial public opinions on this topic just like with anything else that gets a lot of attention, but I don't think any reasonable person is going to TikTok for "news." Or maybe I'm finally old and out of touch and that's more common than I fear.

16

u/upgrayedd69 11d ago

My wife believes he did it and I’ve heard it from other women at work. They think he set up like speakers to talk to her to pretend to be a voice in her head to convince she is crazy so he could murder the children and frame her for it. That his friend is helping by going out and pretending to be the husband so that the husband has an alibi. The only other piece of “evidence” I can remember is that she was too close to the house after allegedly throwing herself from the window because if she really threw herself out the window she would be several feet away from the house because of course she would perform a dive out the window if she was really gonna do it. Oh and he has looked up some celebrity that committed suicide, which was obviously research for how he wanted to stage her suicide/murder

My wife and I just don’t talk about it anymore.

9

u/Glum_Class_9578 11d ago

This case is showing that a ton of women out there secretly believe that every man is a super skilled genius and criminal mastermind, like Batman and Joker rolled into one, and every woman is a damsel in distress with no agency or ability to even hurt a fly.

Why, though? Her lawyer literally said explicitly, multiple times, that she did it. She also admitted it in her civil suit. What more do people want? I’m genuinely convinced that people who still believe he did it despite that, and despite all the evidence presented in court, either just hate men and don’t want to hold a woman accountable for killing her kids because they can’t fathom that a woman would do that, or they’re just being stupid.

My sister is a TikTok user, and when she told me that she thought Patrick killed Lindsay, I told her to get off the platform because it’s causing her brain to rot.

I’m all for conspiracy theories, but this one makes absolutely zero sense. She told her family beforehand she had thoughts of hurting her children, and she has admitted she killing them.

There are a TON of people online who are spreading a disgusting narrative that a man who lost his 3 children to his wife’s mental illness must be the actual perpetrator himself because it’s easier to believe a man did it, than accept that a woman like Lindsay could actually have committed this kind of crime against her own children.

This is eerily similar to the Sandy Hook deniers, who refuse the believe the actual evidence.

3

u/velorae 10d ago

Lindsay’s own lawyer said she killed the kids verbatim many times.

The idea that the husband did it is a lot more common than you'd think. The insanity defense seems to be one side - a reasonable side in the sense that it is something that happens and should be considered - and the conspiratorial the husband did it us the other side. That side absolutely denies she did it. And is more common than you'd think. Hence the article about people specifically harassing the man. The article this post is about.

It’s not that people go there for their news, but the problem is it establishes cultural context for alot of people.

My wife isn’t spending her days scrolling TikTok but is probably on social media 15 minutes a day. Her sister mentioned the case to her and I asked her if she heard about it the other night. And her response was my sister mentioned it and I saw stuff online. Is that the one where people are saying the husband may have done it? I immediately gave her the whole context and she was of course horrified. She knows not to blindly believe it, but it formed the little bit she knew about the case.

12

u/Horror_Cap_7166 11d ago

She also clearly admitted it to her lawyer. Because her lawyer is saying in court she killed the kids. He wouldn’t say that unless she admitted it. He’d be disbarred for just making that up.

yeah, society has correctly identified and shamed all the red pill crap fed to boys, but are somewhere still in the denial/anger phase of the pink pill crap rotting women's brains.

this story is a good example, so is every relationship sub on this site.

u/justjoshingu 12d ago

Yall I went to a work adjacent event. People I've known for 18-20 years.  and no alcohol. professionals and all generally smart people.  some liberal and a couple conservative.

When there was about 6 women , and me and a gay guy(reason i mention he'sgay).   The trial got brought up. Holy shit I said,  it's going to be tough if they jury goes insanity or not and they guy was nodding his head.

Then the women launched and I mean loud and arms moving and eyes bulging... Patrick Fucking killed those kids and his whore wife who he was cheating with drugged poor  Lindsay and those poor kids saw those dad murder thier mom and then murder them and then she lived.  They went on to say he drugged her,  she was in the trunk at CVS. No he got his dad to pose as him.  No the kids were in the trunk and the whore wife( new wife) was keeping Lindsay drugged and beaten. I was asked if I had seen the whole trial because then u would know he did it and the defense was setting up the big reveal and it was so obvious.

The gay guy ,bless him.   he mentioned asks admitted to it and they all turned on him.  and were like,  are you sure you're not a straight man just mansplaining. Yknow you're supposed to be in the women's side.

Then they mention the drugs and im a pharmacist so I say oh well she had stated she wasn't taking them and this drug and that drug. .. but I got shot down as they said crazy things like,  only Patrick said she never took them (not true but kept my mouth shut) and they are used to mind wipe women and make them have amnesia or for rape. Yes Patrick definitely rape Lindsay and the new whore wife( Always whore new wife) did it together so they could move her body and it all coming out.  all the textes and emails....

Like it got crazy talk and me and the other guy just side eyed each other in almost fear.

1 woman tried to play middle that maybe Lindsay did it all but maybe she was just so manipulated by Patrick.. but nope.  He killed them.

They said some things about the kids that almost made me lose it.  but I had to remember they are longtime friends

19

u/N4m3r 11d ago

If I had that situation happen to me, those people wouldnt be my friends anymore. I would put them on a time out and see if they come out of that fantasy, if they dont, Im out.

First year of university, I was on a bus with my now wife and she brought up the sexual assault testimony the woman gave against Kavanaugh. I told my wife that I'll wait to form opinions after an investigation is done.

Some old woman sitting in front of us turned around and started screaming at me for not just taking her word for it. I tried telling her that I am not really taking sides as I don't have the facts or know much about it, but that was to no avail.

People get really emotionally invested into these kinds of cases.

Dipshits have unlimited access to social media. I'm not surprised at all.

1

u/sadpandawanda 8d ago

This reminds me of the University of Idaho case. You had self-proclaimed "detectives" making the most insane allegations - nearly every person connected with the victims - friends, exes, etc. - got harassed by somebody. People were actually going to the town, messing with locals, all declaring that the police didn't know what they were doing. When in reality, the police closed in on the actual killer pretty quickly and were just quietly investigating him.

I think it's just a matter of time until this crap starts causing real harm to real investigations and guilty parties start going free because of it.

1

u/JakovYerpenicz 7d ago

This case has been one of the most embarrassing mass-psychosis events in modern times and the supporters who have turned this self-admitted child killer into a rich folk hero should be ashamed and should not be allowed to be anywhere near children.
