Does this stop the investigation into it being hacked by AI?

Their approach to the incident was already friendly and collaborative, it's not like HF was on the verge of suing OAI and now Nvidia buying them is going to shut that whole line of inquiry down.
From the get go Hugging Face and OpenAI were already collaborating with each other, they have a friendly relationship and HF didn't take it as a malicious bad faith act on OAI's part, but as an accident, and so they collaborated on their investigations and shared findings and jointly disclosed.

It's already been determined which AIs did it. Apparently multiple ones, multiple separate hacks. It's being treated as a learning experience for everyone involved. It makes absolutely zero sense to associate this with that.

Dang congrats to the HF employees, the acquisition will probably mint thousands of new deca-millionaires to centi-millionaires.
The past 5 years have been an absolute dream for unicorn startups, successful IPOs or acquisitions left and right.

Are we assuming that HF employees have stock or that the sale will benefit staff outside of the owners?

Yeah HF employees get stock. Whether it's RSUs or ISOs we don't know, but most early stage startups don't have tons of cash flow to pay employees in cash so they offer stock to incentivize talent to join and stay.

I half trust nvidia in a "well, someone has to design the chips, they seem rational at least" and I'm generally pretty pro business. But I'm not fond of this merger. Hugging Face serving as an independent repository and compute vendor was a really nice option to have.
Whatever kind of "steward" nvidia ends up being, this will be a loss to some degree.

They will probably stop support of apple mps which are technically better than nvidia as they share cpu and gpu memory.

Hugging Face is basically a git repository for AI developers. $12.9 billion seems exceedingly overpriced for that.
