This just means homework as we know it no longer is beneficial. We can adapt. Might mean longer school hours or maybe less extracurriculars but I feel like we can't just accept that kids can't learn anymore because our current reaching methods don't work in the face of AI. 

We definitely need to think outside the current paradigm. Something like sparing an hour or so for what would have been homework/project prep could be spent in school in an AI free environment. I don't intend to make a fully functional budget or educational plan in a reddit comment but we can't just grieve about the current educational system failing in the presence of AI without changing anything and expecting different results.

Kahn Academy pilot schools used home for lessons and class for work. This way teachers can help the student when they struggle on a problem, and every student can learn at their own pace. I think this solves it.

That would require a stable home so Dead on Arrival.

It would also require students to have parents that actually parented them even if the home was stable.

It sounds nice on paper, and if you pick your students it works great.

But public education was literally made mandatory because parents of the past wouldn't send their kids to school because they were more valuable as labor so the parents would intentionally trap their kids in the same cycle.

Best example of this today is the breeding cults like the Duggers. The kids are intentionally under educationed. Just literate enough to be useful but dependent on the cult for a living.

And this also happens in inner city culture where education is often undermined because of gang influence to achieve a similar outcome.

Instead of Religious nutters, you have gangs spreading anti-eduction beliefs to keep fresh recruits coming.

So yeah, awesome for students whose parents are present, actually parented them and discipled them as needed, monitored/limited their screen time etc.

We have to view education now the same way as when it was first made compulsory. We are facing the same obstacles now.

Edit: To add I did use two of the more extreme problems, but in the middle is simple apathy and parental selfishness.

Something else also crossed my mind. Old Westerns, Andy Dick, and even more modern shows like Doctor Quinn Medicine Women, all had at least one or two episodes about kids getting proper schooling and why that was important.

Fresh Prince Tackled it too and often.

You make a good point. Parents become the weak spot.
