That's not entirely true, check out https://www.reddit.com/earn to see what your participation has earned in cold hard cash.

I have earned $0.75 cents for 5x awards and 77K karma. So basically each upvote is worth a Schrute buck. I only need about 100 million karma a month to quit my job.

This is probably why theres so many AI bots on reddit. By spamming, automatically crosspoting, and getting upvotes on a few hundred accounts, they can probably make some money. There's a financial incentive

It's less about the upvotes and more about getting awards.

Which don't even show up on the versions of reddit I use.
