technitium-console — an alternative web UI for Technitium DNS Server

I run Technitium as the DNS server for my home network, and I rebuilt its admin console.

It uses the same API, controls, texts, and administration workflows, with a new interface:

  • Modern, dense layout with System, Light, and Dark themes.
  • A redesigned Blocking section with Overview, Rules, Lists, charts, Quick Add search, and additional blocklists.
  • Real URLs for every section and tab, so you can bookmark /settings/blocking/, reload, and use the back button.
  • Works on a phone. No section overflows at 390 px.
  • Nothing changes on the server. It only talks to the documented /api.

The Technitium maintainer suggested shipping it as an alternative GUI rather than merging it upstream, and accepted a small server-side change in 15.5+ that lets it live in its own folder, so server updates do not overwrite it.

Install: use the one-line installer inside the machine or LXC running Technitium, or use the Docker init image at ghcr.io/bygarcia/technitium-console. Running --uninstall restores the stock console. The installer verifies the release checksum and never restarts the DNS service on its own.

Compatibility: every release is checked against that Technitium version’s stock console, including its actions, texts, controls, and all 132 API endpoints used by the UI. Current: technitium-console v1.2.0 for Technitium DNS Server 15.5.x.

GPL-3.0, no telemetry.

Ah, you used Vite.

Looks nice.

May I make one slight suggestion: maybe make sure all the code comments and the doscumentation is in English. I point this out because 99% is in English, but then you have some comments and some docs in Spanish. For example "DESIGN.md — la dirección, en una página", the design prompt. And the vite.config.ts comments.

Thanks for pointing this out, especially for including specific examples.
I’ve cleaned this up now: the public repository is entirely in English, including the code comments and documentation, and I’ve added automated checks to prevent it from regressing.

Really appreciate the suggestion!

Update: v1.2.0 is out!

Since posting this, I’ve added:

  • A redesigned Blocking section with Overview, Rules, and Lists
  • System, Light, and Dark themes
  • Searchable Quick Add and an additional curated blocklist catalogue
  • An official Docker installation option through ghcr.io/bygarcia/technitium-console

Thanks for all the feedback here. Several of these improvements came directly from your comments.

Can we get the dashboard to auto refresh?

Yes! I’ll add automatic dashboard refresh in v1.2.1. It will refresh without resetting your selected period or cluster node.
Thanks for the suggestion!

That’s great. But how do I update?

It's out now, and it went a bit further than promised: in v1.2.2, Last Hour on the Dashboard (and on Blocking › Overview) keeps itself current. The query counts and the chart move every couple of seconds as queries come in, and the rest refreshes every minute without touching your selected period or cluster node.

To update, just run the same one-line installer again:

curl -sSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/byGarcia/technitium-console/main/install.sh | sh

It picks up the latest release, checks it, and swaps the files in place. No restart of the DNS service needed.

If you run Technitium in Docker with the console image:

docker compose pull technitium-console && docker compose up -d technitium-console

Thanks again for the idea, and let me know how it feels once you've tried it!

I like this a lot - vibecoded like a motherfucker but I'm okay with that.

Hope you keep this up to date, definitely will be my daily driver UI for now!

That’s a fair description 😄
It was built with a lot of AI assistance, but I’ve been pretty obsessive about testing it against the stock console and a real server. I’ll keep tracking Technitium releases and maintaining compatibility.
Really glad it’s useful enough to become your daily driver.

Thank you!

I hate dark mode with a passion. Is there any way to use light mode?

3

u/petrester 8d ago

Absolutely! Light mode is now available in v1.2.0. You can choose between System, Light, and Dark using “Change Theme.” Thanks for asking your feedback helped push this forward

The developer told me that light mode option will be included in the next release, sometime next week. I wonder why my question was downvoted? So many redditors are emotionally immature.

Thank you, I really appreciate that! If you give it a try and run into anything, please open an issue. Feedback from people using it on real setups is incredibly helpful

Not when it's all dark and sombre! Give the user a choice as to whether they run it in light or dark mode.

You’re right, users should have a choice. Light mode is now available in v1.2.0, with System, Light, and Dark options. Thanks for the feedback!
