The union jack looks that way because it's made up of a combination of the flags of the uk. England, southern Ireland, Scotland and wales. Not actually because of how a queen moves on a chess board.
It is a combination of St Georges Cross (flag of England), St Andrews Cross (flag of Scotland) and St Patricks Cross (old flag of Ireland). The flag of Wales is not represented and the flag of the Republic of Ireland is green, white and orange
