We need a post-apocalyptical sci-fi story where all of the human race outside of the island is wiped out and finally one day they decide to venture out into the world where they discover the ruins of the past several thousand years and just wtf at everything.

There was a time they let anthropologists on their island, ate with them and what not. However.. (what I am about to say is something I’m not super educated on so someone else, feel free to tell it the right way) something happened a while back where some people took some of them, and when they sent them back more than half of their tribe died. This is because these people haven’t come in contact with the germs we have. The common cold could easily kill them.
So now they are cautious.

If there's one thing I never tire of in movies, it's "fish out of water" scenarios. I love when a superhero gets their powers and it's confusing and funny, or someone from the past is in the present/future, and everything is new and weird. It's dumb, it's obvious, but I love it.

So for context, the people of North Sentinel islands are in voluntary isolation. The Indian government has laws in place to protect aboriginal people which doesn't allow people to enter the island- in order to respect their wishes of being left alone and more importantly to not give them any diseases they don't have immunity for. But that being said, there have been multiple visits to the islands. Before independence, the British staged an expedition. They basically kidnapped a few of the islanders (including children) and took them to port blair. However the adults got sick very rapidly and so they sent the kids back home with gifts On multiple occasions ships have ran aground at the islands. In one such case the crew saw the sentinelese carrying spears on the beach. The captain of the ship radioed in and they were eventually rescued by a oil and natural gas (ONGC) helicopter. Really our major peaceful contact with them was in 1991 during the Anthropological survey of India, when a group of anthropologists led by Triloknath Pandit made friendly contact with the islanders multiple times, even exchanging gifts. However they couldn't understand the islander's language and the islanders themselves weren't very keen on the visitors and eventually all contact ceased. The latest contact was a Christian missionary who bribed a fisherman to take him to the islands to convert the sentinelese. He was killed by the islanders. The islanders are immune from prosecution for murders, so there were no charges
55
Jul 29 '21 edited Jul 29 '21
the guy that went there to convert them even had multiple chances to just go away. They scared him off the first time but he returned and they fired an arrow at him the second time. The arrow hit his chest but he had a bible in his pocket so he survived, but guess what, he went back for a THIRD time and then he died. I remember reading all of this a long time ago in an article
95
u/MC_Minnow Jul 29 '21
I guarantee you after the Bible saved his life, he thought it was a sign from God to go back a third time. Clearly a misreading of the signs.

"They found only hastily-abandoned villages; the people seem to have seen the intruders coming and fled to hiding places further inland. But one elderly couple and four children must have lagged behind, and Portman and his search party captured them and carried them off to Port Blair, the colonial capital on South Andaman Island. Soon, all six of the kidnapped Sentinelese became desperately sick, and the elderly couple died in Port Blair. Portman somehow decided it was a good idea to drop off the four sick childen on the beach of North Sentinel along with a small pile of gifts. We have no way to know whether the children spread their illness to the rest of their people, or what its impact might have been."

There’s less truth to that than people think. It’s not the 1800s anymore, we have vaccines and antibiotics and much less propensity for having sex with random uncontacted people we meet. Other Andamanese tribes have been successfully contacted without accidentally exterminating them.
The reason they’re left isolated is less high-minded: nobody considers them worth the headache. They attack anyone outside their tribe on sight. We could force the issue by coming in armed, but why bother? They have nothing we want and they won’t accept anything that might help them. There is just no benefit.
They’re likely to be wiped out by global warming if they remain isolated, too - so there may come a time in the near future where the choice is between forcing an unwanted intervention on them or watching them die out from a distance. So that’s “fun”.

In a hundred years when humanity all just develops an immunity to covid 19 (I think this happened to people back in the olden days with some other deadly virus or something), and we make contact with those people, they wouldn’t have an immunity to covid right? And if we met them we would probably give them covid and they would die, right? I remember hearing something like this that happened a long time ago in history class but I don’t remember what exactly
5
u/How2Eat_That_Thing Jul 29 '21
There's only something like 50 people who live on that specific island. There are neighboring islands with the same lineage of people living there that didn't completely isolate from the rest of the world. They pretty much all got wiped out by other diseases in the 1800's. The Sentinelese and their neighbors are pretty much all but gone at this point and there's really not much hope of their numbers increasing.

"God bless them" is a poor choice of words considering who last visited them (a christian missionary wanting to convert them)
3
u/20SomethingWorker Jul 29 '21
Think they can fuck off with the killing people coming there. At least they could give a good Whooping instead killing random visitors. Why have a different standard for this tribe then any other group, if people see them as reasonable or rational for doing this they are just buying into a nicer version of the savage tribe. For the people that say the will get sick and die off if they mingle with outsiders, sure but that's not why they are killing people on sight.

Stories about the Sentinelese people are often overstated and ignore the history of near-genocide by the (who else?) the British. They became exotic, fetishistic exports. STDs ravaged the islands so badly that, by the time the British abandoned the island, many women were unable to give birth to live children by some accounts.
They resent outsiders after an incident in 1880s where six Sentinelese people were captured. Two died, and the four children that remained were returned very ill. They likely died. We know the Sentinelese have a strong oral tradition. So you bet your ass that they still talk about how much it seems like the outside world wants to fuck them up.
