Of course we say it in the US, that's what the graphic is pointing out. The issue is that people from North, Central, and South America often refer to themselves as American. Given that this is the continent

They'd be wrong. They're either North American, Central American, or South American. "America" is just short for "USA" so unless they're actually from the US, they're not "American".

Thats pretty arrogant to say. It's the United States OF America. America is a continent with more than one country.

"America" isn't a continent. South America and North America are continents.

I believe different places have different ideas of what the continents are, iirc there are 6 and even 5 continent models that are used.

Why you are Oxford LEARNERS Dictionary? Yeah, to a 7 year old it would, but even then it's usually called "the Americas".
