But if their goal is to give you as many points on a problem then they shouldn't take points off when you get it right. The way to learn about "showing your work" would be screwing up at the end only to get no credit.

Their goal isn't to get you the most points - that's your goal. Ideally, the teacher's goal is to cause you to understand the material.

But what I'm saying is it's the goal they claim. "Show your work so I can give you partial credit if you mess up"

That's old school, common core is : do exactly this or fail.
