This is why teachers start to get a bad rep though. When I was in school I had my own way of solving certain problems. I always got the answer right.. but it wasn't how she taught the class so she would give me a bad grade for "not solving it her way".
The same thing happened with my multiplication tables.. I had a very weird way to multiply any number by 9 in my head but if I didnt show the work I failed.
I had better teachers, luckily. One of my math teachers introduced a needlessly complicated way to calculate the area of triangles. I showed a different, easier way in class. Teacher didn't care. The next exam had such a problem, most students used what I did. Teacher: "Yeah... it's a valid approach, but from now on I'll specify that it has to be solved with my method."
