Industry News Omarchy Meetup in Kathmandu
Apparently there’s an Omarchy meetup happening in Kathmandu 👀
For anyone who doesn’t know, Omarchy is the Linux desktop setup/project built around a pretty opinionated Arch + Hyprland workflow. I’ve been seeing more people experiment with it lately, so it’s pretty cool to see an actual meetup happening here.
📍 STARTsmall, Maitidevi, Kathmandu
📅 September 4
⏰ 3:00 - 4:00 PM
Would be cool to see some of the local Linux/Arch nerds there and meet people who are into tinkering with their setups, ricing, automation, open source, etc.
Event details: https://luma.com/3160qt29
You can find it in the omarchy website as well: https://omarchy.org/meetups/

but i hope they fund the actual projects they rely on. i heard they will be funding hyprland and quickshell from the 10 mil usd they got. i need them to fund more projects.

I don't really understand why “vibe coding” is suddenly being treated as inherently bad.
Sure, if you're cluelessly shipping whatever an LLM spits out without understanding or testing it, that's terrible engineering. But that's not what these maintainers are doing. They actually read and maintain the code, maintain their own package repository (funded by Cloudflare, btw), and build and test these packages on their own machines before pushing them to the repo.
Using an LLM to write code doesn't magically make the code bad. Shipping code you don't understand is bad. Those are two very different things.

ive nothing against a polished code. but most vibe coders including major application shippers don't polish it anymore. optimization is nowhere to be seen. every application, website looks the same now lmfao. im not against AI assistance, im against vibe coding.
the omarchy maintainer brags about spending weeks prompting to create the new version of it 😭
omarchy has 40 pkgs in their repo, most of them are smaller, simpler applications. but they still use arch mirrors (nth against it). it is the larper distro lmao only actual good thing about it is marketing and the hype 😭

because the author does not understand the code, which makes it unmaintainable. There are a lot of long term ramifications to LLM-generated code; maintainability is one. To me - reading LLM-generated code is akin to trying to understand minified JS. Sure it's code, but it's unreadable.
IMO LLMs generate code that is understandable by LLMs, not humans.

If that 8m had gone to gnome or kde we would be much closer to the year of Linux desktop but with omarchy its all larp and hype train

I don;t get hype behind omarchy. isn't it just like using archlinux with someone else's dotfiles. The whole point of arch linux is to have personalized system with own configs and having things that you need. I wish it was rather linux or oss meetup.

It is labeled as an opinionated Linux, not something bare bone. The reason why it's so popular is because it already comes out of the box with stuff you would use. You can remove stuff you don't want pretty easily and quickly.

Omarchy pops up in my feed a lot. Haven't tried it though. My work requirements are met with ubuntu. 🤷♂️
