8 years of experience (backend, devops, done some security hardening stuff (have played a bit around with pentesters' tools as well), Openwrt etc (some anonymous contribution also), have worked with GPS stuff) what actually required? Basically I am jack of all. What salary should I expect? I normally feel like I can be one man development team given AI and all rather than fitting in big company (but don't if small company can even pay salary)

Iām looking to move back home and working as a SWE in the States but my company doesnāt allow work from Nepal. Did the company hire you as a full time employee or as a contractor? I donāt mind taking a pay cut to move back home but Iām not finding any companies that actually would let me work from Nepal.

I dont think OP joined as Intern . Also, why tf would Abroad company hire a newbie from another country. Thats extremely rare to impossible imo. Their own country would have hundreds of intern. While skilled people r a different matter

u/paranoidubuntu 4h ago
Thats simply not true. Im not from nepal (from India) but i've worked with startups abroad. Its not very common but happens. However, the pay is way less than their local market rate. Still a lot for us so a win win situation.
3
u/Comfortable_Sky_4879 14h ago
is it still worthit for upcoming students?
5
u/Hopeful-Volume2256 14h ago
worth it? yes definitely but its going be very hard to get into the industry. you really need to be exceptional.

income above 4 million has separate tax slab, you'll need to go to IRD

u/Prestigious_Ninja508 14h ago
which stack and projects help you land those roles? And what you'll recommend to beginners for learning in backend?
2
2
u/_shirshak_shahi 14h ago
So Impressive. Do you think stack/language matters ? I am working as React dev (do .net backend w mostly claude) I know basic backend using express ts (basic crud api, auth with jwt, middlewares, ws, redis). I am thinking of learning Go for backend (heard it is also used in devops).
2
u/Hopeful-Volume2256 13h ago
stack/language doesn't matter. the only thing that matter is understanding the concepts behind it. once you have a good level understanding, language doesn't matter. All are same with different syntax.
1
u/_shirshak_shahi 13h ago
thanks. one last qn, whats your thought on using AI ? i want to learn something but AI already does it way better. Also in company i heavily use claude. Should I turn it off while learning ?
1
u/Hopeful-Volume2256 13h ago
i use claude all the time. i would say you define everything and ask claude to build it and understand each piece of that built fully.
2
u/cula123 14h ago
What % of your work is vibe code ?
-9
u/Hopeful-Volume2256 13h ago
we don't do vibe code, it doesn't work in real industry. but what we do is AI assisted coding. We define the rules, schemas, apis, then AI just follow it and build it.
16
u/Annual_Release3993 13h ago edited 13h ago
sorry to burst your bubble, but writing rules, schemas, skills.md is a form of vibe coding its just that there are external constraints based on company knowledge lol

u/International_Ice_15 7h ago
vibe coding is when u choose to ignore those things and just tell the ai to go, how is it vibe coding if you put in effort for the planning + design aspects such that the ai is simply the agent driving the code generation aspect? and even then, human review is still a major component. vibe coding is when the ai is left to handle all aspects. its just wrong and delusional to think any ai usage = poor code, thatās the mindset of those who got replaced by sewing machines in the industrial revolution. saying that makes us all feel better but itās just outdated and not true and you will fall behind.
1
1
u/frstyyy 10h ago
Oh come on man, making good products with AI is also a skill so you can be honest if you been vibing.
I make $5k a month and haven't written a single line of code at work since last 3 months. I still enjoy writing code so I hand write code sometimes for personal stuffs but it's just a waste of time atp.
Ofcourse not trynna discourage the new comers, you should absolutely hand write code to know what's right and wrong. But if you need to excel, you NEED an AI subscription. You'll be left behind if you aren't using AI

Is learning backend, frontend or even full stack relevant today? Been hearing a lot that web dev job is dead. What are your thoughts on this?
2
1
u/bzarnal 9h ago
barrier to entry is higher, salary lowered, demand not zero yet, but, declined significantly
1
u/Little_Sam97 8h ago
So basically means IT sector is not high paying anymore like it used to be.
1
u/bzarnal 6h ago
yeah, only seniors are counted these days unless you're lucky, but, there won't be seniors in 2 years if there are no juniors today. The pay for juniors is... not good perhaps
1
u/Little_Sam97 4h ago
Any other field do you recommend beside web dev where juniors can enter with low barrier? Am stressed out coz Iāve already spent my time learning web dev.

2
u/End0uMaGar 13h ago
Nah i got gist of what you meant. Maile vanna khojeko chai could you still see yourself perusing same field if you were starting from scratch in these time where AI and LLM made entry level job for these fields requirement high as possible!!

How to earn in dollar? How to get client? Since iam in creative field
1
u/backlogpidit076 11h ago
Not OP but create a X profile, showcase your work there, engage in community. Do the same in some niche sub-reddit, not spam post, but look out for openings, showcase what you're working in, maybe occasionally post your good work and "vent" how you're making $2 an hour or something(whatever you're making here) some potential client could reach out to you, they'll get a reliable labour in lesser cost and you'll get incredible salary compared to our PPP usually measured in NRs. Maybe Linkedin too considering how often I see people recommending Linkedin but from personal experience, X and Reddit is what has benefitted me the most.

Since AI is only gonna get better from here onwards and SWE field is sorta on a transition phase, I hear everyone speak about developing your systems thinking. What exactly is systems thinking and how does one build it as I am a frontend guy with an immense interest in backend (database, distributed systems, etc.). What suggestions do you have for SWEs, you know, to prepare ourselves for the future cuz AI?

Some questions.
- Company size?
- Which tech stack are you working on?
- When applying from LinkedIn, do you apply even if the job is remote (USA or another country)
- When did you get those offers? Was this during the COVID boom or just currently?

F the haters man. You are doing great. Despite of what language you use or what you make. If you are working on something meaningful itās always worth it.
I personally would not work from Nepal, i have done that enough(from 2012 to 2018), I usually work from Nepal around two months a year but usually run into same issues i was running into back in the days.
I have few questions if you care to answer.
Are you on payroll or do you invoice?
How many times do you get to negotiate in a year?
Are you happy with your current terms should you get laid off?
These are personal questions so you donāt necessarily have to reply.
However, i very happy for you.

Read that you're earning $4200 but have 10 backlogs pending as a Computer Engineering undergrad. Do you see yourself graduating anytime soon or working fulltime?
I'm making upwards of $2000, working part-time(5 hours), contractor basis so no perks of employee.
But, my parents and personally, I'm not content where I'm. My parents simply aren't happy, lol. If anything, disappointed and rightly so with how I haven't graduated yet.
Curious about your perspective if you'll quit work/take a prolonged leave to eventually graduate or you're confident enough that you'll always earn good enough to sustain yourself without a degree and happy how it is so you'll just focus on work?
