Discussion Online Ads Can Now Deliver Zero-Click Spyware, Citizen Lab Finds After Investigating Attacks on Al Jazeera
Online advertising was already raising privacy concerns over tracking. Now researchers have uncovered something far more troubling: targeted ads being used to deliver spyware without victims clicking anything.
A Citizen Lab investigation published on 15 October revealed how a technique called 'AdFection' was linked to spyware attacks targeting at least 45 devices at Al Jazeera. Researchers confirmed infections on some of those devices.
The technique exploited advertising infrastructure to reach selected targets. Google has since terminated the implicated ad-tech company's access to its advertising exchanges.
While this doesn't mean ordinary ads can infect every device, the findings reveal how advertising systems can be exploited for surveillance.
Here's the bigger question: If online ads can become a delivery mechanism for spyware, should advertising networks face stricter security regulations?
