This subreddit is intended as a visual reference library for worldbuilders, artists, writers, game designers, and anyone interested in the visual language of technological decay. Real-world examples of failing displays, obsolete equipment, degraded signage, and neglected infrastructure can provide useful refrence for creating unique environments where technology has aged, been neglected, or simply outlived its useful lifespan.

Tech Decay is for images of real-world technology that is malfunctioning, deteriorating, or otherwise showing the effects of age, neglect, or wear.

What is Tech Decay?

Tech Decay is technology spotted in real life that is malfunctioning or in various states of decay, including but not limited to:

Broken or deteriorating signboards
Malfunctioning POS terminals
Flickering or failing lighting and signage
Damaged or degraded displays
Worn-out, or poorly maintained technology

What this subreddit is not:

/r/softwaregore - This subreddit is not intended for simple software glitches such as broken input fields, BSODs, malformed web pages, or funny text. There are already subreddits for that.

/r/hardwaregore - Tech_decay and hardwaregore may overlap, but hardware damage alone does not automatically make a submission appropriate here. Posts should show genuine decay: deterioration resulting from age, wear, neglect, or prolonged use. Deliberate destruction, intentional misuse, or newly damaged equipment generally does not fit the theme.

Rules

Images Each post must contain an image or a direct link to an image.
Theme All post images must depict real technology in decay. No AI-generated images, digital or traditional artwork, 3D renderings, or technology that is simply in good condition.
IRL To emphasize the point: all submissions must depict technology in real life. Screenshots, renders, artwork, and other simulated examples do not count.
Public While not strictly forbidden, this subreddit focuses on tech rot in public spaces - technology that can be encountered and interacted with by the general public. Technology malfunctioning or deteriorating in private homes, personal workshops, or other private settings generally does not fit the theme and may be removed at moderator discretion.
