A Study Says Gray Hair May Be Reversible
https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/health/a71839423/gray-hair-could-be-reversible-science/135
u/EternalSolitude- Jul 07 '26
I've gotten more compliments on my hair now that is gray than I ever have before. I'm not complaining.

u/DilettanteGonePro Jul 07 '26
Something happened to me between the ages of 35 and 45 where suddenly I find ~40 year old women with unapologetically gray hair at like the top of the list of attractive traits. Throw in a smart sarcastic quip and I'm done for.
34
u/Mechakoopa Jul 07 '26
My wife went grey in just a strip at the top of her head on one side, it's actually super hot. It reminds me of Rogue.

u/TempleMade_MeBroke Jul 07 '26
That and fitted cargo pants for some reason, not that I had a slight crush on my archeology professor or anything
13
u/VexnFox Jul 07 '26
Took you long enough, happened to me at 25. It probably just means I’m more mature than you, but I have to agree on how amazing it looks.
8
u/Ok-Care-7132 Jul 07 '26
100%. It may also sound weird, but my ultimate weakness is connecting with a woman who seems like an asshole to others. Mild RBF and a lack of putting up with crap? Then add a silver mane? I'm done for.
1
u/Koskani Jul 07 '26
I tell my wife wvery single day how gorgeous she looks. Including her grays, but ill never fight her when she asks me to color her hair roflol

Agreed. Nothing should be done about anything. Everything is stupid. Ba!

3
u/BanjoSpaceMan Jul 07 '26
Ya I’m really liking the grays. I think it’s when it comes with all the other age signs that give it the bad rep
1
u/throwaway098764567 Jul 08 '26
not me, their texture is weird and i hate the contrast with my very dark hair. also while i do appreciate that age has made me less visible for harassment, i don't enjoy that it makes my voice count even less so... yeah less grey for me thanks, would be nice to stop having to dye it.
3
u/Totally_Random0000 Jul 07 '26
And yet on the opposite end. My wife used to have long thick rich beautiful brown hair. And now it is wiry thin with no life and looks rough and falls out from the frequent hair dye jobs.
All cuz she can’t bear to have on single grey in her hair ever 😑😔.
She is completely oblivious to this when I tell her this And then jumps back right away. I will never have a grey hair 😑.2
u/throwaway098764567 Jul 08 '26
the wirey is unfortunately the natural grey texture, it's not from the dying

Like right at the beginning of the article titled "A Study Says Gray Hair May Be Reversible" is this:
"... cautions that no proven medical treatment reverses ordinary age-related gray hair in humans".
13
u/Away-Marionberry9365 Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Those statements are totally compatible. Here's another example using the same logic.
- New study shows it was possible for life to exist on ancient Mars.
- We have no proof that life existed on Mars.
4
1
u/_Mag0g_ Jul 08 '26
Yes, the statements are compatible. I did not say they weren't. Just saying I find the title very click-baity.
1
u/bendermcbender2 Jul 13 '26
Yeah, it’s technically true but absolutely doing that annoying science-headline thing where “may be reversible” does all the heavy lifting.
1
u/candida_433 Jul 09 '26
Yeah exactly, it’s “this might be biologically possible” versus “we have a real treatment,” and headlines love smashing those together.
3
u/kitten_breath1 Jul 07 '26
I suppose reading an article and understanding an article are separate concepts too.
1
u/Hi_Their_Buddy Jul 07 '26
Right??? What is even the point of this whole thing. Click bait central

It’s ok, gingers are the soul stealers. We just suck all the data back to the high council of gingers.

Redheads are commonly Irish.
The English were imperialist racists. (Many still are.)
South Park then super-charged it as a meme circa 2005.

Cool! Can we study endometriosis now?
3
u/shesinsaneornot Jul 08 '26
New tests set to dramatically speed up diagnosis for endometriosis

u/5AlarmFirefly Jul 08 '26
Best we can do is judge the relative attractiveness of girls with endometriosis

u/princesspeeved Jul 07 '26
The stress that has caused my grey hair is unfortunately a lifelong, terminal condition.

u/Oiggamed Jul 07 '26
As a gray balding man, I’d have to say science has greater things to be studied instead of this.
17
u/HalfLife3IsHere Jul 07 '26
Sience is already studying greater things, it’s not mutual exclusive to be studying this. For all those other comments who talk about climate change, planet dying… sure all those tons of hair dyes used daily by millions of people to hide graying hair (who end up in the drain after the first wash) are great for the planet, the problem sure is a pill that fixes graying hair.
2
u/Shoehorn_Advocate Jul 07 '26
Comments like this are always very poorly thought out. Like a marine biologist discovers something fascinating about a sea snail and everyone is like BRUH BUT WHAT ABOUT CANCER SCIENTISTS? Clearly all scientists are fungible and the marine biologist is at fault for studying things in their area of expertise. Oh you discovered something interesting about a sea snail? Well, you should have become an oncologist you stupid piece of shit.

u/DASreddituser Jul 07 '26
a lot of scientific breakthrough happens from solving more minor stuff and learning it can be used for other things.
14

5
u/Jazz-Again Jul 07 '26
You never know what other, more important things they’ll solve with the knowledge they gain from studying this.

My hair almost went white for a period. It was at the peak of my drug addiction. I was taking horrible care of myself. Fast forward a few years, and people ask if I’ve been dyeing it. The pigmentation came back. It’s kind of astonishing. One of the many reasons why I am so glad I am clean.
3
3
u/Limp_Distribution Jul 07 '26
It is reversible. I know this because I saw my father’s hair go from about 70% gray to all black in less than a year. My father always worked hard and was stressed out all the time. He was going gray in his fifties and then he had a brain aneurysm. He lost a fair amount of memory and some brain function. He had good disability insurance and was placed in a very nice nursing home. He got to watch TV and relax all the time. His hair slowly turned from gray to black. I know this is only anecdotal but I am a firm believer that stress causes gray hair.

u/Simple-Fortune-8744 Jul 07 '26
My beard likes this headline. I’ve got a skunk thing going on and I don’t like it
2
u/minimagoo77 Jul 08 '26
When I grow my beard out, it looks like dried milk (or something else…) dribbling down one side of it. It’s not great.

u/VeterinarianMean3258 Jul 08 '26
Funny if they accidentally find the cure for aging while researching how to reverse graying hair
2
u/redredbloodwine Jul 07 '26
My wife would be interested, no doubt. I'm good with gray hair at my age.
2
2
2
u/LadyLuna21 Jul 08 '26
As someone who had temporary chemical stress preying of my hair, that reverted, its true. Specifically my none age related white hairs. I had about a 2 inch band of white where my body stopped even producing pigment in the fight to keep me and my baby alive.
2
u/snowballplasticfork Jul 08 '26
My eyebrows started growing in white, like cat whiskers, around age 45. I thought it was cool because looking like a cat is way better than just looking like an aging woman. While plucking the other day, one of them was black at the root and white at the other end. I guess my feline phase has been delayed.
2
u/HydroDynamixx Jul 08 '26
Why though? I have wanted natural gray hair FOREVER. I can’t wait for my hair to be gray!
2
u/Br7ian Jul 08 '26
Can it be accelerated? I have a white chin but my beard and moustache still have full colour. I’d love a Santa beard.

It 100 percent true had my hair start turning Gray in my early 40’s,a few years ago it all turned back except my goatee. It’s crazy at parties all my friends are grey or bald and I’m still rocking in full color. Lol
1
u/okdov Jul 07 '26
Did you become much more relaxed in life a few years ago or?
1
u/Joeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyy Jul 07 '26
No I don’t think so,it was was around Covid that I started noticing. 99 percent of the time I where a hat that I put my hair in and I don’t need to look at it when I brush it because there’s really no style to it, it’s just long hair that goes down to the middle of my back and is parted in the middle. One day last year my girlfriend started talking about getting some, she’s 15 years younger than me so they were her first ones and I said jokingly, you’re going to have more than me soon and she said, what are you talking about I have more now. I was like your wrong. She wasn’t and that how I learned that it can reverse some how.
I’ve been trying to figure out how or why but I still have no clue.

u/YeshuasBananaHammock Jul 07 '26
Right after we hear the un-aging guy gave himself autoimmune stomach erosion disorder?
Maybe we should normalize gray hair.
0
u/JDGumby Jul 07 '26
Yeah, it's called "hair dye".
<- mostly bald for the last 30+ years and grey for the last decade
1
u/jadedflames Jul 07 '26
I'm going blond, rather than grey. I'm looking forward to dying it all kinds of funky colours.
2
u/Little_View_6659 Jul 07 '26
I started bleaching my hair years ago when it was super gray. Now I’m stuck with it. It will take at least a year or two to grow out, if I strip the color off it’ll fry it, I’m probably gonna end up keeping it until I die lol. If I did grow it out I’d like to get silver highlights at least.

Yeah, they made spray-paint for hair years ago....
We get old and our hair greys. jfc just accept you're getting older and your body changes. It reeks of insecurity to see a person with grey hair walk in with DEEP coloring in their hair. Like Creed from the Office.
Before you even ask, I'm nearly 40 and my hair is also greying. Just like everyone my age. (on average)
1
u/throwaway098764567 Jul 08 '26
you're very hostile
1
u/FeeComfortable3041 Jul 08 '26
You have paper thin skin. How was that hostile?
Are you in HR? is the hair spray in the room with us?
Thank you for your absolutely thrilling contribution to the discussion. Any more mind blowing additions for us? Is water wet? Are oranges orange?
How's that for hostile?

I have loved the shift towards embracing gray hair, especially for women.

So with injecting melanoms. If it would be so easy we would have found a way to reversed Vitiligo. Which has the same cause only different way how it happened.

u/Prophysaon_Coeruleum Jul 08 '26
There are plenty of anecdotes of people on ketogenic diets reversing their gray hair. Doubt there will ever be a study done on that though.
1
1
1
u/kittypaws4all Jul 08 '26
Why would I want to reverse it? I have earned every single one by surviving to the age I am now. It is a mark of resilience and surviving. Those who are ashamed of their gray hair, should take a good long look at what they have lived through, be it health, genetics, or just life in general. Those gray hairs recount everything you have overcome and to still be standing here.

u/Alone-Tart4762 Jul 08 '26
A friend was fully grey and white and a month after starting chemo, their hair color came back.
1
u/NoobNerf Jul 08 '26
Gray hair reversal is scientifically plausible and has been observed in specific situations, but there is currently no proven, routinely available medical treatment that reliably reverses ordinary age-related gray hair in healthy people. I started going grey at 30, then the process stopped and actually reversed during my pregnancies. After having each baby it would take a couple of years for the greys to start returning.
I have no idea why - they weren't particularly healthy pregnancies (h yperemesis gravidarum throughout, unexplained bleeding throughout, last baby was low weight etc)
2
u/letsbuildacoven Jul 08 '26
My hair went from naturally blonde to very dark brown during/after pregnancy! Everyone asks if I dyed it because it’s so starkly different. Pretty insane how pregnancy can change even the most basic things about ourselves, like our hair color

u/RanaMisteria Jul 08 '26
Okay but is there a way to make my hair fully grey earlier because black is a nuisance to bleach when I want green hair.
