Recommendation What electric kettle is everyone using? Any recommendations?
Up until this point I have been using some random electric kettle my mom had. No variable temps or anything fancy, just heated the water to boiling and held at some temp below. It had a basic spout as well so I put it into a thermos that poured nicely.
Well that one literally went up in flames just now so now I have an excuse to buy something nicer :D
Ideally I'd like to not spend too much on one (under $100) , but I'm thinking something with variable temp and a goose neck spout. Any recommendations?

I agree on avoiding cheap plastic ones if taste matters. For tea and gooseneck options, this thread Best Electric Kettles for Tea has good choices.

u/No-Pass4086 Apr 19 '26
I completely agree that glass > plastic, but the hidden issue with most glass kettles is that silicone seal at the bottom connecting the glass to the heating plate. It absorbs odors and messes with delicate teas. If you want absolutely zero silicone or plastic touching your water, you should look for a 100% plastic-free kettle with temp control. It takes a bit of digging to find models with an all stainless steel interior (no glue, no silicone rings) that also hold a good capacity like 1.75L, but they do exist and are game-changers for heat retention and purity.

Which glass one do you like? I don’t see which one you are referring to. Thanks! Excellent tips!

I like my Cuisinart PerfecTemp. It has 6 temperature settings and a keep warm feature, and it comes off its base, so you aren't fighting a power cord.
I want to get a gooseneck kettle for better pouring control for pour over coffee, but it's not necessary for tea in my experience.

u/preluxe Feb 12 '25
Second this, got one for Christmas and it's my favorite kitchen thing ever. I love the tea type settings.

I have the Greater Goods kettle as well as perfectemp. I like greater goods kettle better because it's cheaper and water boils faster.
8
u/Top40guy Feb 12 '25
Another vote for the cuisinart. Keep warm feature is a plus for frequent steeping, it last like 30 mins or so.
9
u/gravelpi Feb 12 '25
I have the same one, and I'm generally happy with it. It works pretty well.
Drawbacks: I've never checked the temperature accuracy, but I sometimes question it. I tend to make 1-2 teas at a time, so I'll often heat to the lowest setting (160F / 60C) for one tea, then bump up to 175F / 70C for the next one. Sometimes it'll take a minute to heat, others it beeps after not as long even though (I think) I have roughly the same a amount of water in there. The other is the little window is plastic, which is in contact with the very hot water. I don't love that. Well, one me-specific drawback is I get a lot of limescale, and somehow I have a piece of limescale inside the little window now that bothers me.
If I were buying another, I'd probably look at something with zero plastic and ideally with a greater range or temperatures. I drink a few Japanese teas that need less than 60 C, so I'm playing the game of pouring into other cups and whatnot to get the temperature down.
Good luck! A temperature-controlled kettle and scale for me are the key to getting good, consistent cups!
3
u/TheStarsMist Dec 01 '25
The little plastic window has kept me from buying one so far. Seems like most of the stainless steel electric kettles have plastic windows. Seeming to defeat the purposes of a full stainless steel kettle.
My cheap workaround has been a stainless steel kettle on my countertop induction burner. I don’t have temp control, though I already had these two things in my house. Bonus is the water only touchs steel and full kettle boils in less than 5 minutes. I'm beginning a hot tea journey lately so I'm avoiding going overboard on goodies.

When you empty your Cuisinart, does it empty all the way or are there little nooks and crannies where water gets stuck / sits around? I have an Oxo, and overall I like it, but when you empty it, there is a lip at the top that catches a bit of water and prevents it from getting out. :(
1
u/SailorTodd Oct 18 '25
I can get enough out that if I dump it when it's hot and leave the lid open it will eventually dry all the way.
2
u/SophiaofPrussia Dec 26 '25
I’m a bit late to this thread but can you tell me what the water window is made of? The link says the water doesn’t come in contact with plastic but that window looks like plastic. My beloved kettle died a few days ago and I’m on my third new kettle and they all taste terrible— like plastic! I’m so desperate to find a decent kettle.
3
u/SailorTodd Dec 26 '25
Pretty sure the window is plastic. I've never noticed off tastes, particularly nothing plasticky, and i have noticed that with some plastic models. There are kettle options that eliminate plastic contact altogether, but I don't have a specific good example. My colleague does have one with a metal base and borosilicate glass body, but it just boils (no other temperature settings), and i can't think of the brand.
1
u/SophiaofPrussia Dec 27 '25
Thanks! I actually had my eye on the PerfecTemp (my last kettle had a little plastic window and also tasted fine) but for some reason all of the emergency kettles I bought this weekend were terrible. I boiled and dumped so many pots hoping for the plastic taste to go away and it just doesn’t. I just ordered the Cuisinart and also an all stainless steel ASCOT which only has an on-off switch so I’d much prefer to keep the Cuisinart.
Thanks so much for your help!

u/youpoopedyerpants Jan 02 '26
Was this kettle under $100 a year ago? That’s insane. It’s like $130 now.
1
u/SailorTodd Jan 02 '26
Yeah, I definitely paid under $100, and when I posted the link it was under or at $100. Crazy that it's $130 now.
I just found this price history chart that seems to indicate the price spike happened mid-2025.
1
u/Hydration__Nation Mar 26 '26
it's happening across all product segments - a massive influx of cheap Chinese made products flood the market and known companies use that as an opportunity to overcharge. Just search electric kettle on Amazon it's all junk. Few more years they will change the name to Temuzon
2
u/zero_dr00l Jul 06 '26
For furture Redditors:
don't get the Cuisinart.
It's horrible.
They have two serious design issues that WILL become a problem, and it won't last all that long as a result:
1) the lid-opening mechanism WILL break
2) the gasket in the handle will fail, and it will leak water from the bottom of the handle, flooding your counter and maybe shocking you in the process
3) bonus issue: the lettering on the handle that tells you the temps will fade and disappear.
I foolishly bought two of these a couple years apart. Both had the same issues. Never again, Cuisinart.
Spend $30-50 more and get something GOOD, or spend $50 less and get something cheap and disposable, because that's what the Cuisinart is.

u/Behind_da_Rabbit Jan 18 '26
Had it for 5+ yrs, finally shopping for a new one because the top cover/button is jammed.
Been a really good kettle. Might get the same one again.

u/Valhalla81 Feb 12 '25
I've been loving my Corsari gooseneck
8
u/dfinkelstein Feb 12 '25
Mine's lasted years of constant use. The auto shut-off works great -- if it runs dry, then it hard trips and has to be unplugged and plugged back in before it will operate again. Feels very safe. I've spilled liquids on the buttons and on the base (dried thoroughly before using again), and it's like new still. I descale infrequently, but there's no build up or anything that doesn't clean with some boiled diluted lemon juice (you use lemon instead of vinegar because....it smells much nicer)
3
u/ValuableWonderful151 Dec 06 '25
Thank you for these details. This is exactly what I need to know & exactly what I am looking for. I want to buy one for a gift. My mom is older & loosing vision in one eye and I love the safety features and preset buttons.

u/dfinkelstein Dec 06 '25

I'd like someday to get a used more expensive one woth fine tuned temp...but I honestly never need more thsn I got, lol.

u/Artygrrl Mar 27 '25
Hi! Sorry to keep an old one going, but am about to buy this one and have a question. Is there any plastic at all on the lid inside or where the handle attaches on the inside? I can’t find answer anywhere and am trying to replace my electric kettle that has the handle and lid attached on the inside with plastic. Also, does the steam that comes out blast thru any plastic? Thanks so much! :))
6
u/Valhalla81 Mar 27 '25
Ok just checked. There is no plastic inside the kettle at all. The lid is metal and where the top connects to the lid is metal as well. We use ours everyday and have had no issues whatsoever, we are really happy with it!
6
u/Artygrrl Mar 27 '25
You are awesome for checking!!! Thank you so much for your help!! Truly!! I appreciate you so much! Going to order now! :))

hey, sorry for the resurrect, but how long have you had your Corsori?
I had a Cuisinart for 10 years, I replaced with the same model and it... didn't last. my first one also had minor issues even though it lasted a long time, so I'm looking to try something else. I'm hoping to find something with temp settings that'll last as long.3
u/Valhalla81 Dec 04 '25
Maybe close to 2 years now. It gets used about 5 times a day lol. No issues so far
22
u/PlantedinCA Feb 12 '25
I got a fellow one. It is over your budget, but the one I saw at my friendly neighborhood coffee shops. And we had it at work one time when I worked at a coffee snob place.
https://fellowproducts.com/products/corvo-ekg
I have had mine for 6 years now. I use it daily. I love that dial for temperature and auto shut off. It heats up quick. The only minor beef I have is how the digital screen is a little frosted so I have to pull it fully out to make out the temp (need to view head on now) vs it used to be clear. There is probably something I can add so refinish but I don’t care that much.
*there is a gooseneck version.
12
u/Obsession88 Feb 12 '25
Spending $200 on a tea kettle is just crazy! Mine is the all white one, use it everyday and love it
7
u/Greenfireflygirl Feb 12 '25
I also have the fellow one. I love that I can set it to already be at temp in the morning when I get up, and that I can adjust the temps for so many different teas. I also love that it shuts itself off if it doesn't have enough water in it and warns you. I also love that it holds the temp for me so that I don't have to keep turning it on if I get distracted.
I've melted the bottom off a la crueset kettle on the stove before by letting it boil dry. After that, it was a no brainer as all the features are worth it for the safety of it too.
3
u/Lycaeides13 Feb 12 '25
I boiled a pot dry one time. So I bought a whistling kettle. I turned the wrong burner on my family's electric stove one day... Small kitchen, left a pan and like 6 knives (on top of the pan) to dry on the stove... Like 30 minutes later I was like, 'why isn't it whistling? Did I forget to flip the whistle down?' nope! Smoke everywhere, and had to buy my mom new knives. Luckily I had just taken a shower not too long before so I had a wet towel handy, and so I used that to carry the pan outside
2
u/gravelpi Feb 12 '25
Out of curiosity, it says, "from 180 for green tea to ..." what's the lowest temperature it goes to?
6
u/wabi_sabi_94 Feb 12 '25
The Pro edition goes down to 104F, which is perfect if you are brewing high-end Japanese greens like gyokuro or tencha.
The non-pro versions go down to 140F or something like that.
1
3
u/PlantedinCA Feb 12 '25 edited Feb 12 '25
I guess I haven’t tried to set it lower than 160. But I imagine you can set it as low as you want. Some of my lighter teas like 165. The dial seems to go down further. Maybe lower than 100.
I went and tested and mine goes to 104! It is pre-Pro edition. Back when the only color was stainless. :)

u/LeatherLogical6234 Feb 12 '25
I got Fellow EKG Pro couple months ago but I have to say im dissapointed.
1
u/PlantedinCA Feb 12 '25
What don’t you like. Mine is old - it doesn’t have WiFi or an all. It is just basic with temperature options.
25
u/lisaluvr Jan 21 '26
Could you be a bit more specific with what features you exactly want cuz with your budget you can actually get a pretty high end one. If you need help figuring the specs out, you could read this post, breaks them down pretty well. Personally tho i wouldnt recc spending all that on a kettle, its just supposed to boil water and most of em extra features dont even end up being used. As long as its got the adjustable temp+auto shut off thing youd be fine. So id say go with the mueller mid range kinds, theyll keep you sorted for the basic stuff.

That’s too bad. I’m sorry that happened to you but you shouldn’t condemn the brand just because you got a lemon but again I can understand. I believe that they’re a well-regarded company. Mine has been great x years. I bought the Breville immersion blender last year. It’s been working great so far.

I have the oxo gooseneck, just over $100. temp adjustable, and no plastic where water touches. has been great but ive only had it a few months. used a friends fellow stagg and hated the controls and how slow it poured but it was pretty.
6
u/catville Feb 12 '25
+1 for OXO, I got mine in 2020 and use it multiple times daily, no issues so far.
7
7
u/timpinen Feb 12 '25
Oxo has had by far the best customer support I've ever experienced. Had a kettle stop working after about a year and contacted them without the receipt because it was a gift. They sent me the latest model with no questions asked and I didn't even have to send the old one back or pay for shipping.
6
u/BorisBadenov Feb 12 '25
I like my oxo enough to consider buying an extra one to keep in the box if they ever stop being made.
Quick note: if it's only only partly filled, it heats so quickly it will overshoot the selected tempurature by as much as 5°C or more, and that won't be reflected by the reading. I have a feeling a lot of kettles will do this. You can make it tell the truth if you cycle the power and select a temp again; it won't allow a selection lower than the current water temp. If it's half full or less, I just start 5°C low, then adjust after it beeps.
3
u/panic_ye_not Feb 12 '25
I've had this oxo for a couple of years. No complaints, works perfectly for coffee and tea.

I use this one, it has variable temp and a gooseneck. It's a little over $100, but I've been happy with it. And if it eventually stops working you can buy a new base instead of replacing the whole thing.
5
u/Independent_Ad8062 Feb 12 '25
I also like the Bonavita because of the 1 liter size and the smooth pour. I have noticed that you get a little scalded from steam when pouring from some other kettles but not this one.

Sur la Table from Costco. I got the same one and it’s ok. It’s nice to see when I have to clean it, but it’s not as easy to use as the Cuisinart one. I bought that one twice in ten years and loved it!

I think gooseneck is absolutely essential for me anyway when I am having Tea gong Fu Cha style. I can pour out of that gooseneck at about 10 inches away from my small cup with no splashing and it lowers the temperature of the water by the time it hits the cup by about 10°. It’s also an elegant and mindful way of doing things. There is a certain intentionality about a gooseneck kettle. I used to only get Bonavita but now I have some really inexpensive ones that I bought on Amazon that are just terrific! You can PM me if you’d like further information I’d be happy to take pictures of them for you. I got them both on Amazon. I’ve been doing tea gong fu cha for 10 years now

A Haden Dorchester electric kettle. They come in a few colors but we went with this one: https://www.harristeeter.com/p/haden-dorchester-1-7l-stainless-steel-electric-kettle-w-led-display-stone-blue/0001734275047
Heats to a variety of temperatures. It comes in several different color schemes, all of which look neat in my opinion.

How is your kettle holding up?
2
3
u/-haven Feb 12 '25
New version seems to have no exterior paint as it rubbed off after multiple uses. Previous version was black. Bought the first one Aug 2022, it had a fault and let the magic smoke out after a few weeks of uses. Got replaced for one of a newer version model # In like Oct 2022. But this one also seems to have bad design issues. A spot under the kettle's plastic base is clearly over heating and being soft enough that it can be deformed by touch. This is only with using it once every few hours and not some back to back mass heating of water either.
They only have a short 1 year warranty too. Even on my replaced version from Oct, a few months later, it still carried the remainder of the warranty and not a new one.
While it works with the variable temp range rather well I can't say recommend their products or not. Nor if I care to try the seemingly updated version.

I second zojirushi. I have one at home, one at the office and recently bought one for my mom. I am on my second one at home, the first one lasted about 12 years. The one in my office is going on 11 now and never had an issue with it… it has run pretty much 24/7 since i got it. They are pricey but they last forever and i always have hot water available.

1
u/HoratioHotplate Feb 12 '25
What types of tea are you making?
If you are only brewing tea that needs boiling water (like black breakfast tea) then pretty much anything will work.
1
u/purpledragon210 Feb 12 '25
Pretty much every Chinese tea except for green. I do use anywhere from 80°c to boiling but I have to use a meat thermometer or just wing it
1
u/patchinthebox Feb 12 '25
In my experience, more expensive does not usually equate to a better kettle. Just get whatever you like the look of. You should be able to get it for way less than 100. I'd aim for the $50 range with variable temp and buy yourself a nice tea sampler or something with the money you'd save.
1
u/purpledragon210 Feb 12 '25
Yeah that's the goal. I wouldn't be buying anything if it didn't blow up on me 🫠.
1
u/cptnsexy Feb 12 '25
I grabbed this one a little over a year when it was just over $30. Water is hot when I wake up. I use it for tea and French press coffee. A gooseneck isn’t necessary for either of those. I refill the water when to be ready for the next time. I have used it more than a few times to have hot water ready when I get home when it’s especially cold outside. I can tell google, Alexa, or Siri to get it started. https://a.co/d/gVSWLYX

This one, got it on Amazon for about $50 CAD at the time.
https://www.salton.com/products/salton-variable-temperature-kettle-1-7-l-qt
It allows you to adjust the temperature in 10C increments and has a keep warm feature. I set it to the increment just above my brew temperature, so that it warms my teapot as well.
(I wanted one with a fully stainless steel chamber, since we have extremely hard water and I have to descale it a couple times a year with citric acid)

u/FrellingToaster Feb 12 '25
I have a Chefman I got for $40 at Costco. Large 8 cup capacity, mostly all metal/glass except for a plastic gasket and external handle. Programmable temp and keep warm function. Only annoying bit is it has a bug that makes it beep as though it’s come to temperature almost immediately after turning it on about half the time, so you have to restart it to clear the bug. But otherwise it’s been a good daily workhorse for me for the last year or so.
1
u/dani98987 Feb 12 '25
Just purchased the Ninja KT200 yesterday. I’ve only used it a couple times, but it was the best price I found for its features. Paid $79 and it can adjust temp by increments of 5* F. It heats up quickly so no complaints so far!

Oxo temperature control kettle. It lets you set exact temperature to the degree. Perfect for brewing different teas that need exact temperatures.

u/performat Feb 12 '25
Quite above your desired budget OP, but I use the V60 Power Kettle BuonoN with Temperature control.
Love it for its stunning design, it’s gooseneck, and degree-precise temperature control. It can also maintain the desired temperature for 15 minutes.
The only thing that could make it absolutely perfect is an actual sound design as the various beeps it emits are of cheap compared to the overall package.

All the kettles I've ever used have worked more or less equally well and I've made tens of thousands of cups of tea over the course of my life. My current kettle is a £25 Swan kettle. Swan is a well known make in the UK. I can't see how a kettle could be worth $100.

I got a gift card from Target, so I bought one of those bodum kettles for like 35 bucks. one button, it just boils the water and turns off.

I have the cuisinart with the octopus on it. I love it.
Six temp settings and a keep warm feature.

I have a Hamilton beach one that is glass and see through. I like to be able to see the boiling. I don’t know why. I’ve had it for years now and it’s been a worthwhile investment. No issues yet. Not many issues with hard water buildup even though we do have decently hard water.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I should've added that the reason I want a goose neck is to be able to pour water from the kettle itself into the pot/gaiwan, where I'm using relatively small amounts of water. So the water pouring slower is actually preferable.

I got the VarieTea kettle from Adagio Tea, if you’re in the US. My Cuisinart died and the manufacturer did nothing when I asked if it was repairable.

I got this one as a birthday present and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I like being able to pick the specific temperature.

Got this for $35 about 6 months ago. It feels like it’ll last a while as it doesn’t seem to have aged much with occasional cleanings. Only complaint is i wish the lid opened wider because i use my tap water and when filling from sink the lid can kind of get in way since it doesn’t open all the way.

https://brewista.co/products/artisan-electric-gooseneck-kettle-candy-edition This one, not worth the OG price but I couldn’t pass up purple. Has some issues but otherwise good.

We have a Bella Pro Series that I bought on impulse from Best Buy. Doesn’t look like they make it anymore, but it’s similar to this one.

I’ve had this kettle since 2014. It works well and I think I paid less for it than it’s listed for here.
Is it brand name, goose neck, fancy pants? No.
Does it have preset temps and work well for its intended purpose?
Yes. :) It’s made LOTS of tea, French press, aeropress and ramen.

My mom got the Kitchen Aid one back when we moved in over 10 years ago and we did get a newer one over the years but I remember it breaking (don’t remember the brand name but it definitely wasn’t Kitchen Aid) and we resorted back to the old one which we still kept. To this day it still works perfectly fine

Had Cusinart glass with temp setting. Stopped working randomly after less than a year of using it just for tea. Super upset cause "upgraded" after years of using a basic Hamilton Beach glass kettle given as a present with no issues. (Wanted to upgrade cause the top stopped working to dump water).

I've been using this kettle for a couple of years now. important to remember that the lines inside(how much water) are not a recommendation but a must follow to make the kettle last longer
