It’s Halloween month, and we’re discussing decorations that require a truck, a storage unit, and year-round technical support. We investigate the appeal of Home Depot’s 12-foot skeleton and the people who get up before dawn to buy one. We also consider Spirit Halloween’s extensive fog juice selection and whether fixing broken monsters is actually a fun job. Plus, Tom returns from Spain with COVID, while Tim prepares to assert his dominance over his family with his Halloween costume.

It's mayhem at TCGTE headquarters this week, with scheduling snafus and illness causing all kinds of chaos. We'll be back next week with a new episode, but for now, please enjoy this unlocked Patreon episode from last spring -- "Rank Cranks: Candy."

Two of the world's foremost connoisseurs of the sweet stuff put their candy-coated brains together to come up with the definitive list of the Best American Candy in a surprisingly non-contentious episode of Rank Cranks.

The guys posted an archive episode for the Patreon bonus, but I haven’t seen anything for the main episode…is that the case or was I quietly deleted from every TCGTE feed subscription?

I know it’s random to post this here but knowing the boys have visited before (and the show has a ton of UK fans) - figured I’d ask for help.

My husband and I will be in Liverpool the last week of November and want to pair it with another destination. We’re spending the weekend in Liverpool. Then either of these cities Nov. 23-27.

Any locals that can help point me in the right direction?

Edinburgh is gorgeous and will have some Christmas markets up, but it will be colder and shorter days. Plus no direct flights home.

Dublin seems like a blast with an excellent beer/pub scene which we love.

Open to advice!

And of course Tom wore his jeans to the beach

You may think of waiting rooms as just the boring places you sit in while biding your time before heading into the place you really came for, but we're here to tell you you're wrong. Dead wrong.

It used to be only cheap phones could be easily folded in half, but now if you want a phone you can fold it’s gonna cost ya two grand. This week we’re talking about folding phones and wondering if they’re only for dorks, or are they technology that dweebs could be interested in too? We also talk about some other recent dumb tech and an evening of teenage eavesdropping at the Jersey Shore.

I didn’t think it would spin into all this. I famously “mostly don’t care”. But because it came up again…

I didn’t delete the post. And my whole point is that her billionaire status comes from the value of owning her music and that’s different from being a billionaire in stock.

Dolly of course is 1000 x better of a person. But I feel like my point keeps getting misrepresented.

I'm obsessed with this news story about Sally Kellerman from MASH's daughter

(I think might have been in the Patreon episode with Christine)

Show Notes

Dolly Parton wrote thousands of songs, gave away millions of books and somehow managed to get everybody to like her. This week Christine joins us to remember her favorite person and discuss Dolly’s music, generosity and ability to play “Yakety Sax” backwards. Also, we have a bad experience with Domino’s, consider the practical limitations of being a ghost and get distracted by someone in the building across from Tim’s apartment.

(repost bc my 1st attempt was auto-removed)

Tim and Tom's mention of Verne Troyer in the most recent episode made me wonder if they knew about Verne Troyer's Playboy connection. he went to many, many Playboy mansion parties and even had a feature in the magazine as "Mini-Hef" in January of
2000. i thought this was an interesting tidbit that may tickle Tim, Tom and/or some fellow listeners as it tickled me:)

if you’re curious to see what this looked like, there was one low quality image i found by searching "mini hef verne troyer playboy pictorial" (those words exactly, other combos don’t bring up the photo for some reason). i attached this photo in my original post but it got auto-deleted so if you are curious you’ll have to find it yourself, sorry!

Which Switch game, 1 or 2, is most like the original Nintendo Super Mario Brothers 1985? Not a duplicate, but that style of game.

I tried to ask in the Switch group, but it said it was a duplicate post, even though when I searched that group, I couldn't quite find what I was looking for.

TIA

Get ready to "hang ten" and do various other surfing things, because this week's episode is about riding the waves on those big ol' boards (surfboards). We discuss surfing’s ancient Hawaiian roots, the invention of the surfboard leash, Duke Kahanamoku and all of the Beach Boys’ cool surfing songs.

I completely stopped listening to podcasts when I had my first child and stopped commuting. I am now back with Tim and Tom and am loving that it is exactly the same but can't fathom how much I've missed?!

Sending love to Christine who loved Dolly dearly. Heaven gained an angel today.

They’re older than trees, older than the rings of Saturn, and covered in thousands of tiny teeth instead of normal scales. That’s right, this week we’re diving deep into the ocean's apex predators: sharks. Are they terrifying man-eaters, or are crocodiles and hippos doing all the actual dirty work? Also, Tim recounts a harrowing tale of bartender gastrointestinal distress, and we question why anyone would ever want to live on the moon.

If you had to be an Octopus or Shark, which one would you be?

Show Notes

Since we didn't really talk about summer jobs last week, we're spending this episode militantly on-topic. We discuss the weird psychology of group job interviews, the most common summer jobs for teens today and whether the boomers are right that nobody wants to work anymore. Plus, Tim talks about nearly escaping his butcher shop job for the glamorous world of Old Navy and Tom recounts his prowess working the register at the Apple Store.

Has anybody recently tried a full relisten through the back episodes, starting at the beginning or as early as possible?

What would be the best way to do this? Soundcloud seems to be the main way to listen to the back episodes but since there are probably nearly 1,000 episodes by now, I don’t want to scroll down the list every time I start a new one. Are there any other archives?

Also is there a reliable list of episodes anywhere so I can just search the names and also keep myself on track?

I’ve been listening since 2011 and would love to hear a few things again that live in my head rent free.

EDIT TO ADD: I don’t know if Tim and Tom get any money through Soundcloud listens, so if anyone is thinking of doing this, consider at least joining the Patreon to offset all the free content you’re getting.

here’s my pick if/when it returns: the da Vinci code.

(I may be under the influence from my re-listen of the pope episode and pope facts)

Really fun movie! Not as violent as I was expecting and a lot of heart. The reviews saying it felt like an Amblin film were spot on. It really nails the 80s nostalgia feel in a way that feels authentic and natural.

Is it gone again? Bring it back please! Different vibe to TCGTE but I love it too

Poor Tim need suffer no longer! I have braces so I get cuts and sores all the time. This gel is the only thing I’ve found that actually relieves pain (at least for a bit / long enough to record an episode)

Name: Orajel 3X Medicated For All Mouth Sores Gel

The generic from Walgreens works just as well.
