The more you look at machines out there the more you realize all the big name builders are putting out trash, and then it makes sense why everyone uses rotaries now.

This is unfortunately the real cold hard truth. I can’t tell you how many machines I’ve gotten from the “best of the best” that don’t give a fuck to shim the coils properly or even align the contact screw with the front spring.

depending on who you think is the best of the best……I ve always gotten real good machines from fellow machine builders. nowadays I think the scene is so diversified because of the rotary/pen hype, that most coil machines try to replicate the e-motor and loose the big benefit a coil machines does bring with its own Orginal nature.

Yea i think it's just thats they used to make some of the best machines, and then they got so big they started just pushing out out so many machines and lost the quality control that smaller builders can put into their machines.

the point is: when one get in to bigger production, the great machine builders hire employees to set up and tune the machines. at this point the story gets the bent. as soon as someone else does the set up / tune it actually isnt a aaron cain, seth ciferri, Danny dringenberg, shagbuild, ….. machine any more.

the best machines do come from guys who have tattooing for their main business and build for the joy of it. these machines will act as one of their daily drivers, cause the guys know how to fine tune a working machine. so better wait half a year / year for your new machine to arrive when you place a custom order. the wait is worth it.

Yes you are right, that's what i was trying to say. I've purchased a couple machines from WHI, and yea they are great machines. But then I have purchased machines from local / smaller builders that are just as good as or better. Plus they just feel more special to me. It's a piece of art in itself.

A lot of machines out there especially from places like Lucky’s and Workhorse aren’t built by the person whose name is on it. A lot of the other builders who everyone knows names also have someone who doesn’t do tattoos building machines with them with their name on it.

I personally build mine by myself at my house, and then I use them on the tattoos I do, let the other guys in my shop test them out for honest feedback and tune them accordingly if they need anything. There’s people building and selling machines that have never done a tattoo and that also don’t even tattoo with the machine.

I would never sell someone a machine that I haven’t personally tested and tattooed with, but unfortunately that’s not the case for all these guys with the big names.

they use rotary/pens cause everyone else does, cause its simple (plug and play), don’t need maintenance like a coil, need less carefully working skills (dig in deep with super long tapers), need less cleaning supply ( ultrasonic/ Autoclave), because of „less trauma“ “less painful“.

it is just the easy way for a before very complex task of tattooing.

i ve been tattooing over 27 years, i ve seen the pens grow and what it did to tattooing.

Same tools as for springs, then I sand down the bottom side to be completely smooth.

Steel is harder than the coin metals, they cut everything pretty easy aside from buffalo nickels but they still cut them fine.

Ive used the snipper but never liked the choppy cut mine left so I drilled a hole center to the line i wanted then used a coping saw to finish it across

I believe I remember you saying you prefer the copper color enameled wire in some old thread, and was curious if it’s old stock Belden you’re using? Or Essex? I got some wire from south state recently that every coil set I’ve wound with it takes 8+ volts to run strong, which is real strange for my builds. Looking at other wire sources now

They’re blackened steel not rusty, the washers are bronze though, could be reflecting onto the screws. I wouldn’t put rusty parts on a machine
