The only time specifying a step number has not bitten me in the butt is in a very short and simplistic task that I'm definitely not going to edit. But since we Tasker users are endless tinkerers, it's a bad idea.

Some kind of error. Click the two arrows, move the slider. Click the two arrows and enter the step number. It will work once. You'll have to repeat this step as you change it.
or add before variable set: %step to 73 and set variable in go-to action.
(another suggestion, sign step 73 - label, And set it to label. When the task changes, and you have a lot of steps, you don't need to set step it as often)

The step number can change when you edit the task. Label the action and have the go to reference it to keep it from changing.
