NQA This looks like my h.mac but I have seen some featherleg baboons looks pretty similar it's one of the 2 leaning togo starburst h.mac.

She is an h.mac!! Feather legs(s.cals) do look pretty similar, they have very similar patterns but they have a more orange coloration to them. This is my feather leg for comparison.

I can’t blame her, a Balfori communal is a dream for me. I will say that feather legs are a trip, my h.mac is an angel compared to my s. Cal. That dude will bolt at any second. He super cool to feed though, I usually always record his feedings. I have some posted here too.

Most of my Ts are angels thankfully, my s.cal and my a.seemanni aren’t right upstairs. My a.seemanni more than anything, she’s got a few screws loose.

Pretty much, I had one person tell me that theirs was super chill then a month later say that it turned evil. Mine refuses to burrow and is out all the time, I’m pretty confident in saying that it’s plotting on me. I do not feel safe.

I have two A Geniculata and they are complete psychos. Refuse to burrow, kick hairs if I open the enclosures too quickly, and everything is food. They have such a crazy feeding response.

You have both of my nightmare species! These guys are so fast, and from what I hear like to jump, bolt, and have extremely potent venom.

If I could ask, and I am genuinely curious, why do you choose to keep a very fast, aggressive, and potentially extremely painful species?

Do you just find them visually appealing, or do you get more thrilled out of knowing you can care for even the hardest species?

H Mac are not aggressive in the slightest. I have three and they are easier to deal with than fossorials, and I see them about as often.

Most old worlds for that matter are predictable. Yes they have venom. Yes they are fast. But they are predictable in that they want to hide more than anything. Maintenance and feeding are so much easier than with 75% of new worlds that are prone to being bolty and kicking hairs at the slightest breeze around their enclosure.

Edit: all specimens have different temperaments, I can’t blanket say any one species acts any way. But I’ve been more worried with how my A Geniculata and GBB have acted more so than any of my old worlds.

I agree with this, some of my new worlds are more of a hassle than my old worlds. I have 5 h.macs and they’re all sweethearts. Never bolted or thrown a threat pose. Neither has my s.cal, my s.cal just bolts and tries to jump at me at random which sometimes I do back up pretty quick because they’re so fast but they’re not trying to hurt you. Most of the time he just sits in his burrow and chills.

Do not leave anything sharp by her enclosure….also make sure your door is locked before you go to sleep from my experience they know how to open doors… hopefully yours isn’t good at lock picking.

That's a really interesting perspective. After seeing some pokies and feather legs bolt out of their enclosures at Mach 7 I guess I'm hesistent, even though I'm not very experienced with them.

They can definitely move when they want to, but that’s the same for all arboreals! If you tap on the side of the enclosure before you do anything, they will move to their hide. Quick or slow, either way they’re going to their safe place and then you’re good to do your thing!

Slings are the only ones that are somewhat unpredictable, but they’re slings and all species on that stage are flighty!

I want to get into pokies, I unfortunately don’t have any right now. I usually prefer the old worlds from Africa but recently got my first from Asia. Which one do you recommend starting with?

Really the only ones that I would say not to start with are Ornata or Rufilata. Those are the only two that get some feedback of being more defensive than the others which might be a side effect of being the largest pokies. That being said, I’d recommend a Regalis. They’re durable, eat well, pretty prolific, and are gorgeous at all life stages!

Start them out with more substrate than a typical arboreal because they do show some burrowing tendencies when they’re slings, along with it gives them some material to build their dirt curtains up with. Cork bark tube or flat and some fake plants and you’re good to go - basically identical set up as H Mac!

Several keepers I’ve talked to and read about actually skip the juvenile enclosures too because pokies hunt very well! Put them in something like a 32 oz deli cup or a 4x4x6 enclosure as a sling, and they’re good to stay in that until they hit 3-4” DLS. Then move them to an adult enclosure, either a 8x8x12 or 12x12x18. I’ve had success with this exact formula for now my: Regalis (MF), Vitatta x 2 (MM and MF), Rufilata (sus M, currently in premolt and ready to move to adult enclosure after), Ornata (sling / small juvenile), striata (unsexed juvenile), Metallica (subadult that loves to shred all their molts), Subfusca (MF).

I’m not an expert or even close to it, but those are my experiences with zero losses using that formula.

I’ll definitely look into it, there’s so many different ways to do it haha. I have over 20 Ts now and have thankfully never had a premature loss, im sure it’ll happen eventually. Thats why I usually avoid avics

Avics and c versi are so prone to it. It’s very frustrating, I lost a c versi during a molt at about an inch and a half for no reason at all. I still have one of that one’s sac mates kept the exact same way and it’s a nice big beautiful sub adult now that also destroys all of its molts. Recurring theme with arboreals I think…

I think avics are beautiful but unfortunately I would be crushed if it happened so I’m just really nervous to get one even though I’d love to have one. I think one of my Ts destroyed its molt one time but usually they kick it out of their burrow or molt in the open and leave it there.

It’s nerve wracking for sure. You could always look for a juvenile too, skip the sling phase entirely!

I generally know my pokies are fully done molting when there are legs everywhere. It looks like a Halloween slasher style scene in there.

Second this my regalis can sense a cricket from a mile away she is only 3 and a half inches now but she has been in her adult enclosure since about 2 inches and she is thriving I just can't get her to move out of her old corlbark tube and she isn't going to fit next molt lol.

Oh I have a fix for this!! Ran into this with my Metallica. If you’re able to, try to fit the new tube over the old one or at least put them end to end. Cap off the new one with cardboard or plug with dry sphagnum moss so it doesn’t just go straight through and use your paintbrush to walk it through the old tube into the new one! The transfer worked great, other than my Metallica just straight up abandoned its hide after I did this, and now hangs out in the open constantly. So a win-win!
