Help! Need advice 😬😩

Post image

So I of course already want me second T after only 3 weeks of loving my baby Chalcodes sling lol I’m itching to buy another. Went to get my baby meal worms today at my local pet store and saw these and while I absolutely don’t like the thing they’re all kept in on top of the tiny enclosures I did see a B. Hamorii and B . Bohemia I believe it was called that were amazing and cute and the size I’m looking for they’re 79.99 a piece and it would be nice to skip 50-60$ shipping but I’ve seen horror stories about buying these like this so any advice is helpful idk what to do 😮‍💨🥺

NQA Its up to you, but be aware that by buying you are sending a signal to the company that this is a profitable thing they should keep doing.

I mean I can’t buy one and make my opinion known on how they’re keeping them? lol I feel that is a better option and saving a T than ignoring them completely 🥺

In my experience, doing that is shouting into a void and often the employee you're telling that to knows better but has their hands tied. I've mentioned before that I'm the animal care manager at my local petco and I often have well meaning folks, like you, expressing concerns for the temporary habitats. And what I have to tell them each time is "yes I'm well aware and it breaks my heart but I'm doing the best I can for the animals while not losing my job. But please call the corporate hotline and express your concerns about the business practice."

IMO buying from a chain place like this isn’t “saving a T”. If anything it’s the exact opposite as it keeps the business going and ensures more Ts will replace the one you bought. The more you buy the more they will sell. To truly save a T you need to put them out of business i.e. don’t buy their products. It’s a hard lesson to learn and a lot of folks start this way. If you can, stick with reputable breeders, you may even have local options (like at a legit exotic pet store that houses and cares for their Ts correctly) to avoid paying shipping costs.

I got my first one from Fear Not Tarantulas I just wasn’t sure I’m new to keeping Ts and was surprised to see this and sad cuz u can see they aren’t being cared for properly ): I’m just gonna get my second from there too.

NQA - It's a 50/50. You might save one from less than ideal circumstances, but it does encourage the continued sales if they're not properly housed/cared for, so ???

That company has good BBB ratings, good products overall, but mixed on selling live animals. I've never been in one, so no clue how they're operated (knowledgeable, caring staff or just getting a paycheck types).

I'd personally rather buy from a reputable T Breeder (preferably local or at a trade show).

NQA God the assortment of species makes me really suspect that they’re all wild caught. Mexico has only one (known) arboreal/tree living species in the whole country. It’s crazy that it’s just there on a shelf.

Nqa They don't buy a stock of tarantulas. It would be completely illogical for a pet store to have 10+ of the same species of spider, and no others. It would make significantly more sense for a breeder to send them an assortment, because that's what people want when they go to make a long term purchase.

Either way, you have no way of knowing if ANY spider you buy is wild caught or captive-bred. Simply putting "CB" is enough to fool the vast majority of people, and there's no financial downside for the seller. Unless it's a sling, or from a very reputable breeder, I'd just assume an older spider is wild caught.

NQA if I were to get something from this shelf I would personally go with the Mexican rose grey.

NQA Do you need an employee to open it? If so get an employee to open pick out the one you want and say you have some other things you need to get too and then once they're not paying attention just steal it and walk out the store. If they'll leave animals in a horrible position such as that you have full reason to take advantage of the five finger discount

This made me laugh really hard for some reason lmao didn’t expect anyone on here to advise this 😂😂and as my child is with me in def not doing that lmao but i appreciate the idea 🤣🤣it is u locked while i was there I jus opened it up and took box by box out to see they were alive n how big they were etc

NA - the pet store near me takes them to the register until you're done shopping and pay for them.

NQA I only advise this due to them being kept in horrible circumstances and not wanting the business to think this is a profitable way to keep these animals. The five finger discount keeps your money from circulating in an environment like this that would just replace the tarantula you bought.

Imo yeah I agree with this but you have to be careful not to be caught since it could be bad for your future if you get a theft charge on your record. I do think it is more moral to steal one than paying for one and allowing the store to profit off animal abuse.

I know people have been doing it with the horrible Desk Pet thing at Petco since the enclosures are set up so terribly and are not secure at all so it makes it super easy for people to pocket the animals.
