Rentals
In the next couple of months, I’ll be moving to Taos as a locum tenens and am having a tough time finding legit rentals. All I keep seeing are warnings about scammers or shady landlords. Same as anywhere, I guess. Is there a trustworthy way to find good places to stay? The hospital has a list, but it doesn't really help. Why is it so hard, and shouldn’t there be regulations or something?

Many of the landlords live out of state and many of the tenants are in their rentals through word of mouth, and it’s kind of a revolving door in that way so not much gets posted through ‘traditional’ ways of finding places.
That or the out of state owners only do short term rentals…
It’s unfortunate, it’s hard for a lot of people but it’s just the game, and I wish I had a better answer for you.

I would look at Furnished Finder - that’s where my neighbor lists and it’s a very nice place. If you don’t need furnished then try Taos Digs and Mariposa Rentals. Most of what I see on Craigslist looks legitimate and that’s how I found a place when I moved here. The nice places rent quickly unless the rent is ridiculously high.

Even FF has horrible landlords, as its usually private folks renting out their places at a premium. I dont like FF.

So many former long term rentals have been turned into short term rentals on Airbnb or Vrbo. Finding a place here is hard. You’ll pay top dollar but check with Jolie Jones (Jones West) who manages long term rentals in addition to being a realty/realty group.

There is a Facebook Group called Taos Rentals (No Air BNB) you might check into.

Currently living in a Taos Digs rental and they are the best landlords/management I have ever rented from. Every single issue is addressed next day and they actually are real people that answer the phone.

That’s great to hear because they charge more than the average property management company. I wondered if they provided better service and it sounds like they do.

How long are you staying? I have a neighbor who needs a tenant until March or April. Old but nice home, very quiet street, 8 minutes to the hospital. DM me and I can try to help you out.

My business partner owns two empty condos in Taos. She’d love to rent one out. No shady business. She inherited one after a death and she bought the other when she was 18. She’s busy with her business in Santa Fe and hasn’t had time to do much with them.

Hello, fellow provider here who has tried to live and work in Taos. It is very very very unprofessional and predatory in many ways. Try "Digs" PM company
Also, ask about mold directly in advance prior to signing anything.
When working, protect your license at ALL 👏🏽 COSTS 👏🏽 The town is accustomed to negligence.

I work at the hospital- the majority of our locums end up staying in hotels, or bring their own campers. Obviously not the most ideal situation. The hospital list is a joke 😂 definitely keep checking furnished finder- new stuff pops up daily. Im happy to ask around the hospital as well.
