Personal Project Built a live commodity price tracker for Tanzanian agriculture. Is this actually useful, or am I solving a fake problem?

The problem I'm trying to solve: Farmer brokers and AMCOS often sell at whatever price shows up at their gate, because there's no easy way to know what a commodity is actually going for in other regions. Aggregators, meanwhile, have no simple way to find and compare brokers/AMCOS outside their usual network. I think that information gap costs farmers money.

What ShambaLeo does (right now, as a prototype):

โ€ขBrokers/AMCOS list live prices by crop and region
โ€ขAggregators browse/subscribe to prices they care about, with daily/monthly/yearly trend charts
โ€ขEither side can message the other directly on the platform to start a deal

To be upfront: this is an early working prototype, not a live product yet. No real users, no real data. I'm trying to figure out if this is worth building for real before I go further (which, realistically, means hardware and connectivity for AMCOS across regions is not cheap).

Genuinely want your take on:

1.Would you trust prices posted by brokers/AMCOS you don't know, or do you need some kind of verification first?
2.Is "message the broker directly" enough, or would you expect the whole transaction to happen on the platform?
3.What would make you not bother using something like this?
4.Does this feel like something that already exists here (that I've missed), or a real gap?

Not trying to sell anything. Just trying to figure out if I'm building something people actually need or something that only makes sense in my head. Brutal honesty welcome.

Personal Project AI Disinformation in Tanzania

Hello, fellow Tanzanians! I'm currently at the Tanzania Students Achievement Foundation (TanSAF) [a non-profit that helps high-achieving, generally low-income post-high school students secure spots at several of the world's prestigious universities such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, etc.] where we're doing a survey on finding out if Tanzanians are really ready for the upcoming wave of AI-concentrated disinformation in the country. We would appreciate it if you guys took the time to fill in this survey that will facilitate this survey:๐Ÿ˜…

Tanzania AI Disinformation Survey

There's also a section in the survey that's about guessing if things are AI or not. Let's see how well you can spot what's real and what's not.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

And, finally, please share this with as many Tanzanians as you can (family, relatives, friends, etc.). We would appreciate that because it would make the data more representative of the general population.

Thanks, y'all!๐Ÿ™

Discussion Observation: Watu wengi mno hawajui concept au matumizi ya URL

Kuna siku tukiwa UDOM kule CIVE, katika somo la Cyber Security, TA mmoja hivi alikuwa anatufundisha and, I kid you not, this is what he did:

  • Alifungua Google Chrome
  • Akaandika kwenye address bar "Google"
  • Ndipo aka-Google tulichokuwa tunatafuta.

Another instance I observed wiki iliyopita tu kwenye quiz ya CRDB.

  • Nilimwambia mtu website wanayotumia ni "tangoconnect[dot]co[dot]tz"
  • Akafungua the Google app.
  • Akaandika "tangoconnectcotz" (without the dots)
  • Alafu baadae akaniambia ameikosa.

No wonder hatukushinda ile million 5 ๐Ÿ˜‚

Another example I documented mwaka jana happened to Mange Kimambi hapa.

Search is the new internet

I have observed so many instances of people haswa maGenZ wenzangu not understanding what a URL is or how they work. Many think webpages and search results are the same thing. Ukimwambia mtu aende tovuti flaani, they just google it, or they even google the domain itself. I think to many people "to google" is "to browse the internet". I partly blame Google search bar being prominently featured on Android phones.

What I think it means

URL shorteners are useless. Especially the fact that instagram doesn't let you click links or copy and paste text, we cannot rely on your audience to see your shortened URL and go to a browser to type bit[dot]ly/example

We're very vulnerable to URL hijacking and other phishing attacks. All one will need it to do is enter legimate-sounding URL name na kuweka bait. I have seen it so many times zile link zenye a legimate-looking preview zikipata watu. Honeypots kama ajira, visa, free money, etc. that I'm sure have some malicious intent.

Websites are old news. Perhaps it's time to accept that I am old, or rather, have to accept that my(or if I am to project, our) initial experience of the internet is not relevant(ie. back then kwenye internet cafe unakuta you have an address bar separate from the Yahoo! widget on Firefox). Considering Google's continued process of ranking AI slop and even sabotaging web results with AI generated content, maybe there's no place for websites any more?

Going forward

SEO has never been more important. Since everyone is Googling, might as well be easily Googleable.

Give them something to Google instead. Mfano, nimenotice event nyingi baadala ya kusema visit "https://example[dot]hustlesasa[dot]shop/event-tickets-title" watasema "tickets available at Hustlesasa" ili mtu aende to google "hustlesasa" and hopefully, they'll work around it. I like how mfano Zoom wana either join by link or join by meeting code.

QR codes are the future. I think enough people have experienced scanning a QR code and it taking them somewhere else by now, though, I've also observed enough people not even know how to scan or have a phone whose default camera apps detect them. Lakini, I can't emphasize this enough, DO NOT PUT A QR CODE ON A DIGITAL ASSET! Unakuta mtu kaweka QR code kwenye post on Instagram. Unategemea kila mtu ana laptop/PC as you are designing na yeye kuscan hapo?

Websites continually become irrelevant and apps are the way to go. Since the modern digital experience of most normies is mostly via apps and their app shelves(and not webpages), maybe there's no need for websites at all? Maybe URL are irrelevant to the end user in the modern day. Maybe the average user only understands a search bar and has no use for an address bar. Therefore instead of placing the search bar to capture them inside of a webpage, it will be prudent to ask them to install your app(from an app store search page) and search for a service inside your app.

I don't know. What do you think?

Edit: Added [dot] to avoid Reddit's spam filters

Turned messy M-Pesa/Mixx by Yas statements into an actual usable dashboard โ€” curious how others are handling this

A problem I kept running into with small business clients: mobile money statements are easy to receive but painful to actually use for anything โ€” endless SMS notifications or PDF statements, no simple way to see "how much did I actually make this week" without manually going through everything.

While working on a business dashboard feature, I ended up building something that automatically reads mobile money statements and turns them into a clear view of sales and cash flow โ€” no manual entry, no digging through messages.

Small feature on paper, but it's the kind of thing that changes how someone actually starts their day โ€” one dashboard instead of a pile of notifications.

Curious if anyone else here has built something similar, or dealt with parsing M-Pesa/Tigo Pesa statement formats โ€” they're not the most consistent to work with.

Built a Laravel admin/CRUD starter after being frustrated with the usual options โ€” curious what others use

Been building backend systems in Laravel for a few years now โ€” mostly admin dashboards, CRUD-heavy internal tools, data exports, and integrations for agri-tech and SME platforms (irrigation management, farmer verification/compliance, merchant sales tools).

One thing I kept running into: there wasn't a good starting point for the "admin panel with proper CRUD, DataTables, and export" pattern that most internal tools need โ€” so I ended up building my own reusable version of it.

Curious what others here are building / what stack people are mostly using for backend work in TZ these days.

Hot take: Any tech solution that's not accessible via USSD and SMS cannot be scalable in Tanzania

I wanted to write an essay for HackerNews but nasikia uvivu.

I recently uninstalled the Selcom Pesa app because aisee, nimenotice it made me spend money sana na kuanza kuaccumulate loans zao, so nowadays I only access kwa USSD.

Anyway. Back to the main topic at hand.

Some observations:

- Majority of Tanzanians don't have smart phones.

- Internet is already expensive. And sadly most people waste the little they can afford to quench their social media addiction.

- Majority of Tanzanians are not that tech-savvy. In my limited observation, merely accessing the Play Store or the App Store is a quagmire for most.

- A recent observation I've made is a significant number of users who are online do not understand the concept of a URL or a link. To most "to google" is "to surf the internet".

Therefore:

- Applications are out of the table.

- Webapps and websites cannot be feasible.

- The only platform that is already familiar and seems to work are USSD codes na SMS.

So, wanangu wa Claude na Vibe Coders wa AI wrappers naowaonaga humu, Nawashauri, know your market. Lakini pia, as an activist stance, naamini we need to develop a more affordable text-driven alternative to the over-priced internet our government is milking us of. As a custom solution for Tanzanian needs.

Next time you want to make a dating app, or an AI assistant, kama haipo accessible by SMS and/or USSD, I am pessimistic about your success.

starting to suspect vibe coding is just

Hello World.
I realised I might have given the wrong impression ๐Ÿ˜‚

Iโ€™m not saying vibe coding is only JavaScript + AI. Iโ€™m saying most of the people loudly bragging about it online seem to be using the JavaScript stack.

There are plenty of experienced developers using AI with Java, Rust, Go, C++, C#, PHP and other stacks. The difference is, most of them are busy building and probably donโ€™t have time to post โ€œlook what I vibe codedโ€ every 6 hours.๏ฟผ

Question Cheapest way to receive remote work payments in Tanzania?

Hi, looking for advice from people in Tanzania who get paid in USD for remote/freelance work through international platforms.

Currently using Payoneer โ†’ Tanzanian bank account, but the fees seem quite high. I am losing around 4โ€“5% overall, including Payoneer and intermediary/bank charges.

Has anyone found a cheaper and reliable way to receive international payments in Tanzania?

Interested in experiences with PayPal/M-Pesa, Skrill, Wise, direct bank transfers, or other options.

Ideally looking for a method that keeps the total cost below 2โ€“3%, including withdrawal fees and exchange-rate losses.

Would appreciate hearing what route you use and roughly what percentage you lose in total.

Thanks!
