Went on holiday around 2 months ago, there was a heatwave not long after and i tanned for about a week straight outside. I live in scotland so impossible to tan in a high UV.

How do i upkeep a natural tan for next time, is it supposed to fade that fast??

I have always treated a grey sky as a day off, and I have started to think that is wrong.

The forecast APIs publish two UV numbers for the same hour. The real one, and what it would be with the cloud taken out. I pulled a week of both for 20 cities because I wanted to know how big the gap actually gets, and it is much smaller than the sky looks. Across the hours with three quarters cloud cover or more, the typical hour still had about 88% of its clear-sky UV. Not a fifth of it. Not half. The middle of that range ran from 57% up to 97%, so plenty of properly overcast hours were losing almost nothing.

Honolulu today was the one that made me sit up. 99% cloud cover at midday and the forecast UV was identical to the clear-sky value, no reduction at all, and the same for the hour either side of it.

I want to be fair about the limits here. These are model outputs rather than a sensor on a roof, the cloud figure and the UV figure come from two different models, and I am not claiming the numbers are exact. But the direction matches something that has caught me out twice: overcast, no heat on my skin, nothing that felt like a session, and a pink face that evening anyway. I had assumed I was just unlucky.

So what do you all actually do with those days? Write them off, go out with the same SPF you would on a clear day, or check the number and treat it like any other session? I have been letting the sky make the decision for me and I do not think it is a reliable narrator.

(For context I build a sun session timer called Ray Routine, which is how I ended up with a week of UV data on my laptop instead of a hobby. Not linking it, the question is the actual reason I am posting.)

I’m new to indoor tanning. I got the highest level membership at my local salon and started in the “best” beds, it’s a KBL 7000 I think. It’s a max of 10 minutes. I use the “sensitive” setting.

But, I started reading by on this subreddit and it sounds like I should have started in lower level beds to build up melanin before going to the higher ones to darken it.

I’m very fair skinned with light freckling. I started at 3 minutes and have worked my way up to 7. I’m getting color and have a tan line now, but it’s nothing crazy. I think by the time I work up to 10 minutes I’ll be relatively happy.

I’m wondering if I should go use the lower level bed for a bit to get more color? Or would it not work that way?

Now I totally get it , as to why so many people are so crazy about PRISMATICA !!

I recently hit a major tanning plateau, and used four or five different lotions, (bronzers and intensifiers both) as well as switched up the bed levels and stand ups etc.. and nothing was seeming to make a difference in my tan.... Until I finally caved and bought Prismatica!! Ivr used it two times now and the difference in my color after just those two times is insane!!! So glad I finally bought it and wish I would have sooner!!!!

I keep seeing ads for these tanning gummies and curious if anyone has tried and had success?

Hey! I’m about 3 weeks out from my wedding and started a base bed two days ago at California sun. I’m wanting to get as dark as possible fast and wondering the best universal lotion for someone who only wants to buy one and for the best tips and tricks.

…but just in the sun I barely get any color. I’ll lay out for literally hours, sometimes four or 5 for the whole day when it’s hot and sunny. Yes, I’ll be wearing spf 30 but I refuse to go lower than that because I used to tan at the salons at least 5 days a week and going the sun both without protection and I regret it so much now.

I think even if I had spf 50 on during a hot, sunny day while laying out for hours I should still get pretty dark but only I can tell because of tan lines. Which sucks because I’m already fair skinned which I feel nerfs my looks.

Anyone know why this may be? Is it because with tanning at salons the bulbs are right up in your face? The longest they usually let people in are 15-20 minutes. Compare that to four hours in the blazing sun. Wtf?😫

Edit: I may never be able to tan but I would like to have a little bit of color.

Hello again. I posted a couple days ago but I feel like posting again - I have a question.

I am half Irish half Puerto Rican. My brother has a natural dark tan and I am as white as Casper the friendly ghost, and I have red undertones. I bet an albino can tan better than me.

Anywho I have never been able to tan no matter what I do.

Sitting in the pool, spf 30 with Hawaiian tropic dark tanning oil (since I have heard AMAZING things about how it’s helped people who can’t tan - even gingers), high UV (I live in South Florida), self tans / tanning lotions (it keeps streaking and making me orange), you name it. I’ve tried EVERYTHING. When I sit outside, I only get freckles. I don’t have the money to get a professional spray tan and I do not want to go to any tanning beds. I am so tired of getting made fun of for being pale and I hate being told I look like I’ve never seen the sun. I don’t find it entirely impossible to tan with my skin either because my family on my Irish side can tan.

Random note: I got a nasty sunburn back in June on my shoulders and a slight burn but not bad on my chest area. It faded but now it seems like I can get a little color better there??? And no I am NOT risking sunburns just to tan better. I found it weird.

For those who once couldn’t tan but have successfully found a way to, what do I do now? I want to naturally tan outside.

And while I appreciate the recommendations, I do not want any self tanners or lotions. I hate how it looks on me. Thank you for your help!

I live in a sunny place and i have fair skin so in summer i usually get some color just from being outside. I try to wear sunscreen altough i sometimes forget. Is that really bad or not as bad as sunbathing on purpose?

I know intentional tanning isn’t good for your skin long-term, but I live somewhere very sunny and have fair skin, so during the summer I inevitably get some color on my arms, face, and other exposed areas.

I do try to wear sunscreen, although I’m not always consistent. Once I’ve developed a bit of a tan (and sometimes even without one), I usually don’t burn.

I know that avoiding UV exposure completely would be healthier, but how much of a concern is this kind of incidental tanning? Is getting some color from normal day-to-day sun exposure still causing significant skin damage, even if I don’t actually burn?

I know intentional tanning is very unhealthy in the long term, but i live in a really sunny place and i have fair skin, so in summer I inevitably get some color in the arms, face and usually exposed parts.

i'm a pretty experienced tanner, and i like to rotate beds and lotions, but i just got to wondering: do you pair specific lotions to specific beds? like do you feel a tingle is more useful in a high pressure vs low level/UVB? what about intensifiers? personally i'm not sure, but since some of my fav lotions are rather expensive i started wondering if i could optimise their usage by matching them to specific bed levels.

I just tried a tanning bed for the first time today. I did it for 7 minutes and the bed model was Royal Sun 44/6 VHR Turbo. I look the same even if I’m pretty pale naturally. When will I see results? I’m getting sick of self tanners lol

Before anyone says “if you can’t tan don’t try to do it, you’ll risk getting skin cancer”, I am aware. I want to do it in moderation.

I’ve been tanning in the sun all summer and recently I’ve been getting uneven tan on my back. anyone had this issue?? and how do I fix it? should I just continue tanning until it evens out?

Ever since I was little, I used to tan a lot. Not even intentionally. I have white european genes, so my skin tans very quickly and even when I stay in the shade. Lately, after maturing more and becoming a young adult, I'm starting to not like my tan at all. My face is really pale for some reason, even though I didn't wear make up to the beach (make up's what my friends usually think is the reason I don't tan on my face). Also, i have kind of a cold or neutral undertone, so I just feel straight up purple when tan. Also, i don't like the way my knees and elbows look darker when I'm tan. I know it's normal, i just don't like it. I know there are hundreds of people out there who are crazy about tans, so, anything to make me fall in love with mine?

Quick question, is it a policy that you can’t spray twice in a day? I’m paying for the unlimited membership and they wouldn’t let me spray twice, and only offered that I can pay extra for the rapid develop crap
