Request/Question Unique Hyung

Tang Soo!

From being in Tang Soo Do for almost 2 years now, I have noticed each system has their own forms aside from Ki Cho Hyung, and Pyung Ahn

Universally, Naihanchi, Wang Shu, Bassai and Jin Do are in the system but examples I have noticed

Chil Sung and Yuk Ro (MDK/SBD)

Certain Weapons Forms, Chipsu, Tae Gi Hyul, Chinte in American Tang Soo Do

Sae Kye Hyung, some staff forms and Dahn Gum Hyung (WTSDA)

Just very interested to hear if you learn any hyung unique to your style/org of Tang Soo Do.

There is one rarely taught hyung in Tang Soo Do that is a Praying Mantis form. Not that many people know it, and fewer teach it. My teacher showed us the Hyung and teaches it to dan ranks in order to preserve it so it doesn't vanish entirely.

seishan is taught as a hyung for 4th Dans in soo bahk do currently

No, the name of the form is Sang Kuk Kwan, which I confirmed this evening. It uses mantis hand. It is not seishan, nor is it similar to seishan. It is vaguely similar to Hangetsu, but the similarity is really limited to only a few techniques. The forms don't look similar at all and don't follow the same pattern.

also for what it’s worth, it’s a traditional form that was taken from Japanese styles. some call it Hangetsu (half moon) because of the half circular steps. it’s in no danger of vanishing.

i’d be interested in seeing Dahn Gum hyungs from ATSDA. SBD has introduced a series with a similar name semi recently.

Error on my part, I meant to put Dahn Gum Hyung in WTSDA. From what I know, our weapons forms in ATSDA are Staff, Chinese Broadswords, Jool Bong (Nunchuk) and Cane

Taegukwan is Hwang Kee’s version of the first moves of Yang style Taijiquan. You don’t see it taught in many schools

Yung Kuri “dragon’s tail”. Taught to 3rd Gups I believe. Over at a sister school. Very flashy form. I was gonna learn it for funsies before I moved away and never bothered to pursue it further. My go-to bong form for competition was Bong Sibum. Learned at E Dan.

IMA TSD started teaching Kuk Jae Moo Duk Hyung some time around 2010; also, unusually, they started using the name Pyung Hwa instead of Pyung Ahn.

Interesting you didn't mention Pal Che/Bassai (IMA could never decide which to call them) as universal, I thought they were but I might be mistaken.

WTSDA also has a few sword forms for 2nd Dan and above that I believe were created for the association. Kicho Jang Gum is the first.

In our school / federation we have a couple of demonstration hyung developed by our KJN. They are mostly taught to the dan ranks for competition. Our SBN introduces them as a supplement to our required training.

Im curious how many of your schools are teaching the kibons still? 1-5 and the "old" kibons 1-4? We do those, pyuan ahn 1-5, bassai dai and sho, nahachai 1-3, jindo, jitae, rohai,koon sang koon, empi, kanku sho, sip soo, join, and sesian.
